Objective 2: Build a Smelter

Build your Havendock Smelter to transform ores into vital ingots for crafting advanced tools and structures. Secure your first copper ingot.

Objective 2: Build a Smelter (and Secure Your First Copper Ingot!)

Welcome back, resourceful survivor! Your Beacon is now a beacon of hope, guiding your progress. The next essential step in establishing your Havendock settlement is to construct a Smelter. This fundamental crafting station is your gateway to transforming raw ores into vital ingots, which are the building blocks for advanced tools, structures, and survival gear.

It's important to clarify a common early-game point of confusion: the Smelter itself does not require Copper Ingots to build. Instead, the Smelter is the tool you use to create Copper Ingots from raw Copper Ore. The single Copper Ingot required for your initial Beacon construction is a special, one-time acquisition designed to kickstart your progression before you have the means to smelt it yourself.

Acquiring Your First Copper Ingot (Pre-Smelter)

For those who have completed Objective 1 (Build a Beacon), you've likely already encountered one of these clever early-game solutions to obtain that crucial first Copper Ingot:

  • Scavenger's Luck (Rare): While not a reliable method, there's a small chance that breaking down particularly large floating debris piles with your Basic Axe might yield a pre-smelted Copper Ingot. This is a fortunate find rather than a planned strategy.
  • Diving Helmet's Boon (Consistent): The most reliable and intended method for acquiring your first Copper Ingot involves the Diving Helmet. After crafting and equipping this essential piece of gear at your Basic Workbench, you can explore the shallow underwater areas immediately surrounding your starting raft. Within these initial diving zones, a single, pre-smelted Copper Ingot can typically be found nestled amongst coral formations or scattered debris. This is intentionally placed to provide the necessary material for the Beacon before you possess the means to smelt ore yourself.

With your Beacon powered by this initial ingot, you're now ready to build the infrastructure for sustainable ingot production.

Step-by-Step: Building Your Smelter

The Smelter is a cornerstone of your crafting capabilities, allowing you to process raw ores like Copper Ore and Iron Ore into their refined ingot forms. These ingots are essential for almost all mid-game progression, from crafting better tools and weapons to building advanced structures and machinery.

  1. Gather Construction Materials:

To build the Smelter, you will need the following resources. Ensure you have these items in your inventory before proceeding:

    • 8x Stone: Stone is a ubiquitous early-game resource. Look for small, grey rock formations directly on the surface of the water or attached to larger debris. Interact with these to collect Stone. Larger, non-collectible debris piles can also yield Stone when broken down with your Basic Axe.
    • 4x Scrap Metal: Scrap Metal is another common early-game resource. It is primarily obtained by breaking down various types of floating debris with your Basic Axe. Keep an eye out for metallic-looking wreckage, crates, or broken machinery parts floating on the water's surface.
  2. Craft the Smelter at the Basic Workbench:

Once you have gathered the required 8x Stone and 4x Scrap Metal, approach your Basic Workbench. Interact with it to open the crafting menu. Navigate to the "Structures" or "Refinement" tab and select "Smelter" to craft it. This action will consume the materials from your inventory.

  3. Place the Smelter:

After crafting, the Smelter will appear in your inventory. Select it from your hotbar or inventory screen and find a suitable, stable location on your raft or a discovered island to place it. Consider its proximity to your storage solutions and other crafting stations for optimal workflow and efficiency.

  4. Fuel the Smelter:

The Smelter, like most early production buildings, requires fuel to operate. The most common and accessible early-game fuels are:

    • Wood: Gathered from floating logs found on the water or by chopping down trees on islands using your Basic Axe.
    • Coal: A more efficient fuel source than wood, often found by diving in deeper waters where it appears as black, shiny chunks, or as a rare drop from certain types of debris.

Open the Smelter's interface by interacting with it. You will see designated slots for input materials, fuel, and output. Drag your chosen fuel (Wood or Coal) into the fuel slot. The Smelter will indicate its current fuel level.

  5. Produce Your First Copper Ingots:

Now, it's time to smelt! To produce Copper Ingots, you will need Copper Ore. Here's how to obtain it:

    • Diving (Primary Method): Equip your Diving Helmet and descend into the water. Search for reddish-brown ore veins attached to the seafloor, larger underwater rock formations, or even shipwrecks. Interact with these veins to mine Copper Ore using your Pickaxe. The initial diving zones near your starting raft are typically rich with this resource.
    • Debris (Secondary Method): Occasionally, larger debris piles found floating on the surface, especially those that appear more mineral-rich, may yield small amounts of Copper Ore when broken down with your Basic Axe. This is less consistent than dedicated mining.

Once you have collected Copper Ore, place it into the Smelter's input slot. Ensure you have fuel in the designated slot. The Smelter will then automatically begin processing the ore into valuable Copper Ingots, which will appear in the output slot.

Smelter Production Overview

The Smelter is your primary station for refining raw materials into usable ingots. Understanding its basic output and resource consumption is key to planning your resource management and production chains.

Input Material Output Material Approximate Fuel Cost (per item) Approximate Smelt Time (per item)
1x Copper Ore 1x Copper Ingot 1 unit of Wood or Coal 10-15 seconds
1x Iron Ore 1x Iron Ingot 2 units of Wood or Coal 15-20 seconds
1x Tin Ore 1x Tin Ingot 1 unit of Wood or Coal 10-15 seconds
1x Silver Ore 1x Silver Ingot 2 units of Wood or Coal 20-25 seconds
1x Gold Ore 1x Gold Ingot 3 units of Wood or Coal 25-30 seconds
... (Further ores become available as you progress through game areas and research) ... ... ...

Strategic Tip: As your settlement grows and your resource demands increase, consider building multiple Smelters. This allows for simultaneous processing of different ore types or significantly speeds up the production of large quantities of a single ingot type. Placing them in a dedicated crafting area can also improve efficiency.

Common Pitfalls and Essential Tips

  • Fuel Management is Crucial: Always monitor your Smelter's fuel gauge. An unfueled Smelter will halt all production, potentially delaying critical crafting. Prioritize keeping it stocked, especially when you have a backlog of ore waiting to be smelted. Later in the game, conveyor systems can help automate fuel delivery.
  • Organize Your Ore Storage: Copper Ore, Iron Ore, and other raw materials can quickly consume your inventory space. Construct several Basic Storage Chests near your Smelter to keep your raw materials organized and easily accessible for smelting. Labeling chests can be helpful.
  • Diving Helmet Maintenance: Remember to repair your Diving Helmet at the Basic Workbench whenever its durability drops. A broken Diving Helmet mid-dive can be a dangerous situation, potentially leading to drowning, loss of valuable resources, and even your character's death.
  • Early Game Ingot Priority: Focus on establishing a consistent supply of Copper Ingots. They are fundamental to a vast array of early-to-mid game recipes, including essential tools like the Metal Axe and Metal Pickaxe, components for basic automation, and parts for early-stage vehicles.
  • Smelter Placement: While convenience is key, also consider the aesthetic and functional layout of your raft. Placing Smelters in a dedicated crafting zone can improve efficiency and make your base feel more organized. Ensure they are placed on stable foundations to prevent them from falling into the water.
  • Resource Depletion: Be aware that ore veins and debris piles are finite in specific areas. You may need to explore further afield or discover new islands to find more raw materials as your production needs grow.

Congratulations! By building and operating your Smelter, you have unlocked a critical tier of crafting in Havendock. You are now self-sufficient in producing essential ingots, laying a robust foundation for further expansion, technological advancement, and survival against the challenges of this oceanic world.
