Basic Controls & Movement
Mastering the Knight's movement is not just about knowing the buttons; it's about understanding the nuances of each action and how they combine to navigate the treacherous world of Hallownest. Precision, timing, and adaptability are paramount. While the default controls are intuitive, they can be fully remapped in the options menu to suit your playstyle. Experiment early to find what feels most comfortable.
Core Movement Controls
These are the fundamental actions you'll be performing constantly. Get intimately familiar with them.
- Movement (Left/Right):
- Keyboard: Left/Right Arrow Keys or A/D
- Controller: Left Analog Stick or D-Pad
- Tip: The Knight's movement speed is consistent. There's no "walk" or "run" toggle. Learn to make small, precise adjustments for platforming.
- Jump:
- Keyboard: Z or Spacebar (default)
- Controller: A (Xbox/Switch) or X (PlayStation)
- Tip: Jump height is determined by how long you hold the button. A quick tap results in a short hop, while holding it down achieves maximum height. This is crucial for navigating tight spaces and avoiding enemy attacks.
- Attack (Nail):
- Keyboard: X or J (default)
- Controller: X (Xbox/Switch) or Square (PlayStation)
- Tip: Your primary offensive action. The Nail can also be used to bounce off certain enemies and environmental hazards (like thorns) by striking downwards (a "down-strike" or "pogo"). This technique is vital for reaching hidden areas and avoiding damage.
- Focus/Heal:
- Keyboard: C or K (default)
- Controller: B (Xbox/Switch) or Circle (PlayStation)
- Requires: Soul.
- Tip: Hold this button to consume Soul and heal one Mask of health. This leaves you vulnerable, so choose your healing moments wisely, typically during enemy staggers or in safe zones.
- Dash (Mothwing Cloak):
- Keyboard: Shift or LShift (default)
- Controller: RB (Xbox) or R1 (PlayStation/Switch)
- Acquisition: Obtained from the Greenpath area after defeating the Hornet (Greenpath) boss.
- Tip: A quick burst of speed that makes you invulnerable for a brief moment. Essential for crossing gaps, dodging attacks, and repositioning during combat. It has a short cooldown before it can be used again.
- Map (Wayward Compass):
- Keyboard: Tab or M (default)
- Controller: Select/View (Xbox) or Touchpad (PlayStation) or Minus (Switch)
- Acquisition: The map itself is bought from Cornifer in each new area. The Wayward Compass charm (purchased from Iselda in Dirtmouth) allows your position to be shown on the map.
- Tip: Frequently check your map to orient yourself. Getting lost in Hallownest is easy!
- Inventory/Charms:
- Keyboard: I or Esc (default)
- Controller: Start/Menu (Xbox) or Options (PlayStation) or Plus (Switch)
- Tip: Access your inventory to equip charms, view relics, and check your geo count. Pauses the game, allowing you to strategize.
Advanced Movement Techniques & Practical Tips
Beyond the basic button presses, mastering movement in Hollow Knight involves combining actions and understanding their applications in various scenarios.
1. Jump & Dash Combos
- Long Jumps: Combine a full jump with a dash at the apex of your jump to cover significantly more horizontal distance. This is crucial for crossing wide chasms or reaching distant platforms.
- Dash-Jumps: Sometimes, a dash immediately followed by a jump can give you a burst of speed and height, useful for clearing obstacles or getting over enemies quickly.
- Precision Platforming: For very precise jumps, try to initiate your dash slightly before you reach the edge of a platform. This can give you a small boost that helps clear tricky gaps.
2. Nail Pogo (Down-Strike)
- Execution: While airborne, press the Attack button and hold down (or down-left/down-right) on your movement stick/keys. The Knight will strike downwards.
- Applications:
- Bouncing off Enemies: This is a primary method for staying airborne during combat, avoiding ground hazards, and dealing damage. Many bosses require expert pogoing.
- Traversing Spikes/Thorns: You can safely bounce off most environmental hazards that deal damage by pogoing them. This is essential for accessing many secret areas and shortcuts.
- Maintaining Height: Pogoing off multiple enemies or objects in succession can allow you to cross vast vertical distances without touching the ground.
- Mastery Tip: Practice pogoing on stationary enemies like the Husk Guard in Forgotten Crossroads. Learn the timing and the visual cue for a successful bounce.
3. Wall Jump (Mantis Claw)
- Acquisition: Obtained from the Fungal Wastes after defeating the Mantis Lords.
- Execution: While next to a wall, jump. The Knight will cling briefly and then push off.
- Applications:
- Vertical Ascent: Essential for climbing vertical shafts and reaching higher platforms.
- Wall Sliding: You can slide down walls by holding the movement key towards the wall. This allows for controlled descents and precise positioning.
- Wall Cling: Briefly cling to a wall without sliding by holding the movement key towards it. This can be used to pause and assess your next move.
- Mastery Tip: Combine wall jumps with dashes for even greater vertical and horizontal reach. A common sequence is: wall jump > dash > wall jump on the opposite wall.
4. Double Jump (Monarch Wings)
- Acquisition: Obtained from the Ancient Basin after defeating the Broken Vessel boss.
- Execution: Press the Jump button a second time while airborne.
- Applications:
- Extended Airtime: Provides an additional boost in the air, allowing you to clear larger gaps or recover from mistimed jumps.
- Dodging: Can be used to quickly adjust your position in mid-air to avoid projectiles or enemy attacks.
- Mastery Tip: The double jump resets your dash cooldown if you use it after a dash. This allows for advanced maneuvers like "dash > double jump > dash" to cover immense distances.
5. Isma's Tear (Acid Immunity)
- Acquisition: Obtained from the Royal Waterways after defeating the Flukemarm boss and navigating a hidden path.
- Effect: Allows the Knight to swim safely through acid without taking damage.
- Tip: While not a direct movement ability, Isma's Tear unlocks new pathways and shortcuts previously inaccessible, fundamentally altering your movement options across Hallownest.
Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them
- Button Mashing: Resist the urge to mash buttons. Hollow Knight rewards deliberate and precise inputs. Each action has a specific timing.
- Forgetting Abilities: As you gain new movement abilities, integrate them into your muscle memory. Don't just rely on jump and attack; remember your dash, wall jump, and double jump.
- Ignoring the Environment: Look for opportunities to use the environment to your advantage. Walls for wall jumps, enemies for pogoing, and even breakable floors for shortcuts.
- Lack of Practice: The best way to master movement is through consistent practice. Don't be afraid to revisit earlier areas or spend time in less dangerous zones just focusing on movement combinations. The tutorial area (King's Pass) is excellent for this, even after gaining abilities.
By understanding these controls and actively practicing their combinations, you'll transform from a struggling wanderer into a nimble and unstoppable force, capable of conquering Hallownest's most daunting challenges.
