King's Pass

Welcome, aspiring Knight, to the very beginning of your perilous journey through Hallownest! King's Pass serves as the tutorial area, introducing you to the fundamental mechanics of movement and combat. While seemingly straightforward, mastering these basics here will set the stage for your survival in the challenges ahead.

Initial Descent and Movement Basics

You begin your adventure in a small, enclosed chamber. Your first task is to simply move forward. Head right, and you'll encounter a broken path. This is your cue to learn how to jump.

Movement: Use the left and right directional inputs to walk.
Jumping: Press the jump button to leap over obstacles. A short hop is useful for small gaps, while a full jump will carry you further.

Continue to the right. You'll soon come across a ledge that requires a simple jump to overcome. Further on, you'll encounter your first enemies.

First Encounters and Combat Introduction

The King's Pass is home to a few docile, yet aggressive, creatures that will serve as your combat training dummies.

Husk Hornhead: These small, horned creatures will slowly approach you.
Husk Sentry: Slightly larger, these enemies also move slowly.

Your primary weapon is the Nail. Practice striking these enemies to defeat them.

Attacking: Press the attack button to swing your Nail. Aim to strike enemies before they get too close.
Soul Collection: Defeating enemies will release white orbs, which are Soul. Collect these by walking over them. Soul is crucial for healing and using abilities later.

Proceed through the short combat encounters, collecting any Geo (the currency of Hallownest) dropped by defeated foes.

The First Bench and Map Acquisition

After navigating a few more jumps and defeating a couple of enemies, you'll reach a significant landmark: the first Bench.

Resting at a Bench: Interacting with a Bench will save your game progress, replenish your health (Masks), and allow you to equip Charms (though you won't have any yet). This is your primary save point.

Just past the Bench, you'll find a small opening leading downwards. Descend carefully. At the bottom, you'll spot a familiar figure.

Meeting Cornifer: This charming cartographer is humming a tune. Speak to him to purchase the Forgotten Crossroads Map for 50 Geo. This is an essential early purchase, as it will reveal the layout of the next area as you explore.

After acquiring the map, continue downwards. You'll find a path leading to the left, which will take you to the exit of King's Pass and into the vast expanse of the Forgotten Crossroads.

Key Items and Collectibles in King's Pass

While King's Pass is primarily a tutorial, there are a few things to keep an eye out for:

Geo: Dropped by defeated enemies. Collect as much as you can to prepare for purchases in the Forgotten Crossroads.
Forgotten Crossroads Map: Purchased from Cornifer. Absolutely vital for navigation.

There are no hidden secrets or complex puzzles in King's Pass. Focus on mastering your movement and basic combat, and you'll be well-prepared for the challenges that await you in Hallownest.
