Howling Cliffs

The Howling Cliffs are a desolate, wind-swept region located at the far northwest of Hallownest. This area is often one of the last to be explored due to its remote location and the need for specific abilities to navigate it fully. It's characterized by strong winds, jagged rock formations, and the haunting sounds of the wind itself.

Accessing Howling Cliffs

There are two primary ways to enter the Howling Cliffs:

  • From Greenpath: The most common entry point is a hidden passage in the far northwestern section of Greenpath. You'll need the Mothwing Cloak (dash ability) to cross a gap and reach the entrance.
  • From King's Pass: A less obvious, but earlier accessible, entrance exists at the very top of King's Pass, the starting area of the game. This requires some precise platforming and may be difficult for new players without movement upgrades.

Key Locations & Items

Despite its barren appearance, the Howling Cliffs hold several important secrets and valuable items:

Cornifer's Location

Upon entering the Howling Cliffs, your first priority should be to locate Cornifer, the mapmaker. He can be found near the initial entrance from Greenpath, after navigating a short series of platforms. Purchase the Howling Cliffs Map from him for 75 Geo to make your exploration significantly easier.

Stag Station

A crucial Stag Station is located in the central-western part of the Howling Cliffs. Unlocking this station provides a fast travel point to and from Dirtmouth and other discovered stations, which is invaluable for traversing the vast distances of Hallownest. The station is usually found by following the main path downwards from Cornifer's location.

Grimm Troupe Tent (DLC Content)

If you have the Grimm Troupe DLC, a large, distinctive tent will appear in the Howling Cliffs after you've initiated the questline. This tent serves as the hub for the Grimm Troupe and is where you'll encounter the enigmatic Troupe Master Grimm. To activate the Grimm Troupe quest, you must first find and interact with a hidden brazier in the Howling Cliffs, often found by breaking a destructible wall in the lower sections.

Lifeblood Cocoon

A Lifeblood Cocoon can be found in the eastern part of the Howling Cliffs. These cocoons provide temporary Lifeblood Masks, which act as extra health, making them useful for challenging encounters or exploration. Look for it in a secluded alcove, often requiring some precise jumps.

Pale Ore

One of the six precious Pale Ore fragments can be found within the Howling Cliffs. This ore is essential for upgrading your Nail at the Nailsmith in the City of Tears. The Pale Ore in Howling Cliffs is typically located in a hidden cave accessible from the upper-eastern section, often requiring the Mothwing Cloak or Mantis Claw to reach.

Charms

  • Grimmchild (DLC): Obtained as part of the Grimm Troupe questline. This charm summons a small bat-like companion that attacks enemies.
  • Weaversong: While not directly in Howling Cliffs, the path to the Weaver's Den (where Weaversong is found) can be accessed from the Howling Cliffs, specifically through a hidden passage in the far eastern wall. This requires the Crystal Heart (super dash) to cross a large gap.

Enemies & Hazards

The Howling Cliffs are home to a few unique enemies:

  • Great Hoppers: Large, aggressive insects that leap towards you. Their attacks are predictable, but their size can be intimidating. Dash through or over them.
  • Volt Twisters: Flying enemies that emit electric projectiles. They are best dealt with quickly using Nail attacks or spells before they can launch their attacks.
  • Winds: The constant strong winds in certain areas can push you around, making platforming more challenging. Time your jumps and dashes carefully.

Exploration Tips

  • Listen for Cornifer: Always listen for Cornifer's humming and the scattered paper trails to locate him and purchase the map.
  • Look for Destructible Walls: Many secrets in Howling Cliffs, including the Grimm Brazier and the Pale Ore, are hidden behind destructible walls. Look for cracks or subtle visual cues.
  • Utilize Movement Abilities: The Mothwing Cloak is almost essential for navigating the gaps and avoiding hazards. The Mantis Claw (wall jump) is also highly recommended for reaching higher ledges and exploring vertical shafts.
  • Mind the Gaps: Several areas feature long drops into the void. Be cautious with your jumps and always ensure you have a safe landing.
