Unlike the first game, Hotline Miami 2 features multiple playable characters, each with unique abilities and masks that are often tied to their narrative. You won't always get to choose your character; the story dictates who you play as in most levels. However, when a choice is presented, understanding the implications is key:

- The Fans: This group of five vigilantes (Mark, Alex & Ash, Tony, Corey) offers distinct playstyles. For example, Tony (Tiger Mask) can only use melee but has a powerful instant kill punch, while Mark (Bear Mask) can dual-wield SMGs.
- Jacket (The Original): Appears in flashback sequences. His mask selection works similarly to the first game, offering various passive bonuses.
- The Writer (Evan Wright): Cannot kill, only disarm and knock out. This forces a completely different, non-lethal approach to levels.
- The Detective (Manny Pardo): Starts with a pistol and has a unique 'Macho' ability that allows him to survive one hit per floor (though this is often a narrative device).
- The Soldier (Beard): Appears in war flashbacks. Often has access to military-grade weaponry.
Each character's abilities fundamentally alter how you approach a level. Pay attention to who you're playing as and adapt your strategy accordingly. There's no 'best' character, only the one suited for the current narrative context.
