Many doors and mechanisms are activated by pressure plates. You'll need to either stand on them yourself, or find heavy objects (like rocks or crates) to place on them. In multiplayer, multiple Bobs can stand on plates simultaneously. Sometimes, a plate needs to be held down for an extended period.
