Mech Types and Roles

Understanding the distinct roles of each mech type is paramount to success in Into the Breach. Your squad composition dictates your tactical options, and knowing how to leverage each mech's strengths and mitigate its weaknesses is key to protecting the power grid.

1. Combat Mechs (Prime)

These are your primary damage dealers, often equipped with weapons that deal direct damage and can push enemies. Their role is to eliminate threats and reposition Veks.

  • Typical Weapons:
    • Punch: (Starting weapon for most Prime Mechs) Deals 2 damage and pushes 1 tile. Excellent for finishing off weakened Veks or pushing them into environmental hazards.
    • Rocket Mech's Rocket Punch: Deals 3 damage and pushes 2 tiles. A powerful upgrade that significantly increases its utility. Prioritize upgrading this early.
  • Strategies:
    • Target Prioritization: Focus on Veks that are directly threatening buildings or other mechs.
    • Environmental Kills: Look for opportunities to push Veks into water, chasms, or lava for instant kills. This saves valuable turns and mech health.
    • Chain Reactions: Use pushes to make Veks collide with each other, dealing additional damage.
    • Positioning: Always consider where a Vek will land after being pushed. Can it still attack a building? Can it block another Vek?
  • Pilot Synergy: Pilots like Archimedes (extra move after attacking) or Mafan (starts with 3 reactor power) can greatly enhance a Combat Mech's offensive capabilities and mobility.

2. Brute Mechs (Ranged/Artillery)

Brute Mechs specialize in area-of-effect attacks, long-range assaults, or unique crowd control. They often require careful positioning to avoid friendly fire or maximize impact.

  • Typical Weapons:
    • Artillery Mech's Howitzer: Deals 1 damage in a small area and pushes affected units. Crucial for displacing multiple Veks or hitting targets behind obstacles.
    • Boulder Mech's Rock Launcher: Fires a projectile that deals damage and creates a blocking boulder. Excellent for creating choke points or protecting buildings.
  • Strategies:
    • Area Denial: Use AoE attacks to damage multiple Veks or clear pathways.
    • Indirect Fire: Leverage their ability to shoot over obstacles to hit otherwise unreachable targets.
    • Building Protection: Use push effects to move Veks away from buildings, even if it doesn't kill them.
    • Synergy with Combat Mechs: Soften up groups of Veks for your Combat Mech to finish, or push Veks into your Brute Mech's line of fire.
  • Pilot Synergy: Pilots like Bethany (starts with shield) can protect Brute Mechs, which often have lower health, while Kai (bonus damage on first attack) can make their initial strike devastating.

3. Science Mechs (Support/Utility)

Science Mechs generally deal no direct damage but excel at manipulating the battlefield, disabling Veks, or providing defensive buffs. Their utility is often underestimated but vital for complex scenarios.

  • Typical Weapons:
    • Hook Mech's Grappling Hook: Pulls a target 2 tiles. Invaluable for repositioning Veks, saving buildings, or setting up environmental kills.
    • Control Mech's Teleport: Swaps positions with a target. Extremely versatile for moving Veks, blocking spawns, or repositioning your own mechs.
  • Strategies:
    • Vek Repositioning: Pull or push Veks away from buildings, or into danger zones like water or lava.
    • Blocking Spawns: Position your Science Mech or a pulled Vek onto an emerging Vek spawn point to prevent new enemies from appearing.
    • Buffing/Debuffing: use any unique abilities to shield allies or weaken enemies.
    • Sacrificial Plays: Sometimes, using a Science Mech to block a critical attack, even if it means taking damage, can save the mission.
  • Pilot Synergy: Pilots like Chen Rong (immune to smoke) or Harold (extra damage when attacking a unit in smoke) can synergize well with specific Science Mech weapons that produce smoke. Kazaaak (can move after attacking) is also excellent for repositioning after a utility action.
