Kenshi's world is a complex tapestry of warring factions, each with its own unique ideology, history, and relationship with other groups. Understanding and navigating these faction interactions is crucial for survival, trade, and achieving your long-term goals. Diplomacy in Kenshi is often less about formal treaties and more about actions, reputation, and strategic alliances.

Major Factions and Their Ideologies

  • The Holy Nation: A deeply religious and xenophobic faction that worships Okran. They are hostile towards non-believers, especially women who do not adhere to their strict gender roles, and anyone associated with the "Old Empire" or robots. Their territories are often arid and dangerous, patrolled by zealous Paladins and Inquisitors.
  • The United Cities: A sprawling empire built on trade, slavery, and a rigid social hierarchy. They value wealth and order, but their methods can be brutal. They are generally tolerant of most races but are fiercely protective of their economic interests and will punish theft and rebellion severely.
  • The Shek Kingdom: A warrior race focused on strength and honor. They are often at odds with the Holy Nation and have a proud, martial culture. While they can be aggressive, they respect strength and can be reasoned with if approached with respect and a show of power.
  • The Tech Hunters: A neutral and nomadic faction dedicated to exploring the ruins of the Old Empire and recovering lost technology. They are generally friendly to all races and are a valuable source of information and rare artifacts.
  • The Anti-Slavers: A rebel group dedicated to freeing slaves and opposing the United Cities' slave trade. They are often found in the southern regions and can be valuable allies if you share their goals.

Building Reputation and Diplomacy

Your reputation with a faction is primarily determined by your actions:

  • Completing Quests: Undertaking and successfully completing quests for a faction will generally improve your standing with them.
  • Trading: Regular trade with a faction's settlements can slowly improve relations.
  • Combat: Attacking members of a faction will severely damage your reputation. Conversely, defending a faction from their enemies can earn their favor.
  • Slavery: Participating in or benefiting from the slave trade will negatively impact your reputation with factions like the Anti-Slavers.
  • Stealing and Raiding: These actions will be met with hostility from most law-abiding factions.

Interacting with Factions

  • Dialogue Options: Certain dialogue options can open up new questlines or improve relations, especially if you have a high enough skill in relevant areas like Persuasion.
  • Bribes: In some cases, offering bribes to faction leaders or guards can smooth over minor transgressions or gain access to restricted areas.
  • Alliances: While formal alliances are rare, you can achieve de facto alliances through consistent positive interactions and by fighting alongside them against common enemies.
  • Enemy of My Enemy: Kenshi's world is dynamic. Factions are constantly at war with each other. You can exploit these conflicts to your advantage, attacking weakened enemies of a faction you wish to ally with.

Remember that Kenshi is a sandbox. Your interactions with factions will shape your experience. Choose your allies wisely, and be prepared for the consequences of your actions in this brutal, unforgiving world.
