Crime and Punishment
In the harsh world of Kenshi, the line between law-abiding citizen and wanted criminal is often blurred, and sometimes, it's the most profitable path. Understanding the mechanics of crime, arrest, and imprisonment is crucial for survival and even for strategic advantage. This section will guide you through the intricacies of Kenshi's justice system.
Understanding the Law
Different factions in Kenshi enforce different laws. What might be a minor infraction in one territory could be a death sentence in another. Always be aware of the faction controlling the area you're in, as their guards will be the ones enforcing the law.
- The Holy Nation: Extremely strict. Any non-human race (Shek, Hivers, Skeletons) is considered an abomination and will be attacked on sight or enslaved. Women are subservient, and any independent female character will be harassed. Theft is met with extreme prejudice.
- United Cities: More lenient than the Holy Nation but still heavily stratified. Theft, assault, and trespassing are serious offenses. Slavery is legal and a common punishment.
- Tech Hunters: Generally neutral and less concerned with petty crime, focusing more on research and exploration. However, attacking their members or stealing from their facilities will still incur their wrath.
- Flatskin/Hiver Factions: Typically more focused on survival and trade. While they will defend themselves, their "laws" are often less formalized than major powers.
- Outlaw Factions (Bandits, Cannibals, etc.): Have no formal law system. They will attack on sight, and there is no "justice" to be found, only survival.
Committing Crimes
Crimes in Kenshi are detected by line-of-sight from NPCs. If a guard or civilian sees you commit an illegal act, a bounty will be placed on your head. The severity of the crime determines the bounty amount and the response from authorities.
Common Criminal Acts:
- Theft: Picking up items that don't belong to you. This is the most common crime.
- Strategy: To steal effectively, ensure no NPCs are looking directly at the item or your character. The "Stealth" skill is paramount here. Dark environments (nighttime, unlit buildings) also provide a bonus to stealth. Look for items in containers like Chests, Storage Barrels, or directly on Shop Counters.
- Example: In Hub, stealing Dustwich from the Bar counter when the barkeeper is busy talking to another patron.
- Assault/Battery: Attacking an NPC without provocation. This will immediately turn nearby guards hostile.
- Trespassing: Entering restricted areas, typically marked by "Private Property" signs or guarded doors.
- Strategy: Often a precursor to theft. Use stealth to enter these areas undetected. Be aware that some factions, like the Holy Nation, consider certain areas (e.g., Holy Farms, Barracks) highly restricted.
- Breaking & Entering: Forcing open locked doors or gates. Requires the Lockpicking skill.
- Slavery: Capturing and selling NPCs to slavers. While legal in the United Cities, doing so to citizens of other factions can incur bounties.
- Murder: Killing an NPC. This usually results in a very high bounty and aggressive pursuit.
Bounties and Arrest
Once a bounty is placed on your character, it will appear in your character's status window. Guards of the relevant faction will actively seek you out. If caught, you will be arrested.
- Arrest Procedure:
- Guards will approach and attempt to subdue your character. If your character is unconscious or unable to resist, they will be picked up.
- You will be carried to the nearest Police Station or Guard Barracks that belongs to the arresting faction.
- Your character will be placed in a Prison Cell.
- Paying Off Bounties:
- If you have enough Cats (Kenshi's currency), you can speak to a Bounty Broker (found in some bars or police stations) or directly to a guard captain to pay off your bounty. This will clear your wanted status.
- Alternatively, if you have a high enough Relations score with the faction, sometimes guards will be more lenient or even ignore minor bounties.
Imprisonment and Escape
Being imprisoned isn't always a death sentence; it can even be a training opportunity.
Serving Time:
- Your character will remain in a Prison Cell until their sentence is served. The sentence duration is proportional to the bounty amount.
- While imprisoned, your character's Strength and Toughness stats will slowly increase as they struggle against their bonds or endure beatings from guards.
- Your character will be fed by guards, preventing starvation.
- All stolen items in your inventory will be confiscated upon arrest. Legally owned items will usually remain.
Escaping Prison:
Escape is a viable, albeit risky, option. It's an excellent way to train Lockpicking and Stealth.
- Acquire Lockpicks: You'll need Lockpicks to open your cell door. These can sometimes be found on unconscious guards, smuggled in by a friendly squad member, or crafted if you have the necessary materials and skills.
- Pick the Cell Door: Use your Lockpicking skill on the Prison Cell Door. Be wary of patrolling guards.
- Stealth Out: Once out of your cell, use Stealth to navigate the Police Station or Barracks. Look for an exit.
- Evade Guards: If spotted, guards will attempt to re-arrest you. Running is often the best option, especially if you have high Athletics.
- Find a Safe Zone: Head to a territory where you don't have a bounty, or a secluded wilderness area.
Pro Tip: If you have multiple squad members, one can intentionally get arrested to train Lockpicking and Stealth while another waits outside with supplies or to break them out. Remember to equip your "jailbird" with minimal gear, as most will be confiscated.
Slavery
In the United Cities and Holy Nation territories, getting caught for certain crimes (especially if you can't pay your bounty) can lead to enslavement. This is a challenging but unique gameplay experience.
- Becoming a Slave: You'll be stripped of most gear, given Slave Rags, and forced to perform labor (e.g., mining Copper or Iron).
- Escaping Slavery: Similar to prison escape, but often harder due to constant guard patrols and the need to remove Slave Shackles (which requires a high Lockpicking skill or a Shackle Key from a guard).
- Training Opportunity: Slavery can be a brutal but effective way to train Strength, Toughness, and Athletics through forced labor and frequent beatings.
Mastering the art of crime and punishment in Kenshi can open up new avenues for progression, from illicit wealth generation to unique character development through forced labor or daring escapes. Choose your path wisely, and always be prepared for the consequences!
