Skills & Specializations
Last Epoch features a deep and engaging skill system where each class has access to a unique set of active skills that can be further customized through specialization trees. This allows for incredible build diversity, enabling players to tailor their character's abilities to their preferred playstyle, whether it's melee combat, spellcasting, or summoning.
Every character class in Last Epoch begins with a core set of skills. As you level up, you unlock more active skills and gain points to invest in their respective specialization trees. These trees offer a wide range of modifications, from altering damage types and adding new effects to changing how the skill functions entirely.
Understanding Skill Specializations:
- Skill Points: Earned through leveling and completing quests, these points are used to unlock nodes within a skill's specialization tree.
- Specialization Trees: Each active skill has its own unique tree. These trees are often divided into multiple branches, allowing you to focus on specific aspects of the skill.
- Node Types: Nodes can grant passive bonuses, alter damage types (e.g., changing a physical attack to fire), add secondary effects (like applying a debuff), or fundamentally change the skill's behavior (e.g., turning a single-target attack into an area-of-effect spell).
Example: Sentinel's Smite Skill
The Sentinel class has a skill called Smite. In its base form, it's a melee attack that deals physical damage. However, through its specialization tree, you can:
- Change its damage type to Holy or Lightning.
- Make it an area-of-effect attack that hits multiple enemies.
- Add a chance to stun enemies.
- Grant it a healing effect for yourself or allies.
- Turn it into a powerful ranged projectile.
This level of customization means that even the same base skill can function completely differently depending on how you've invested your points.
Key Concepts:
- Skill Unlocking: New skills become available as you level up your character and progress through the story.
- Mastery: Some skills have a 'Mastery' node, which often provides a sificant boost or a unique transformation to the skill.
- Synergy: The most powerful builds often come from skills that synergize well with each other and with your passive tree choices.
Experimenting with different skill combinations and specialization choices is a core part of the Last Epoch experience. Don't be afraid to try new things and see how they impact your gameplay. The respec system ensures you can always adjust your choices if something isn't working out.
