Game Modes (Normal, Hardcore)

Last Epoch offers two primary game modes: Normal and Hardcore. Each mode provides a distinct experience, catering to different player preferences for risk and reward. Choosing the right mode is essential for enjoying your journey through Eterra and setting appropriate goals for your character.

Normal mode is the standard way to play, offering a forgiving experience where death is a temporary setback. Hardcore mode, on the other hand, introduces permadeath, where a character's demise is permanent, and all their progress is lost. This sificantly raises the stakes and encourages a more cautious and strategic playstyle.

Normal Mode:

  • Death Penalty: When your character dies in Normal mode, you are returned to the nearest town or a safe zone with a loss of experience. You can then respawn and continue playing with your character intact.
  • Accessibility: This mode is ideal for new players learning the game's mechanics, experimenting with different builds, or simply enjoying the story and content without the constant threat of permanent loss.
  • Loot and Progression: All loot, experience, and progression are retained upon death, making it a more relaxed and forgiving experience.

Hardcore Mode:

  • Permadeath: If your character dies in Hardcore mode, they are permanently deleted. You will need to create a new character to continue playing.
  • High Stakes: This mode is for players who seek the ultimate challenge and thrill. Every decision, every encounter, carries sificant weight.
  • Cautious Playstyle: Hardcore players tend to be more risk-averse, prioritizing defensive stats, careful engagement, and thorough preparation.
  • Exclusive Rewards: While not always the case, sometimes special cosmetic rewards or achievements are tied to Hardcore progression.

Choosing Your Mode:

If you are new to Last Epoch or ARPGs in general, starting in Normal mode is highly recommended. It allows you to familiarize yourself with the game's systems, learn enemy patterns, and experiment with builds without the fear of losing all your progress. Once you feel confident and have a solid understanding of the game, you might consider venturing into Hardcore for a more intense and rewarding experience.

Both modes share the same campa, endgame content, and itemization. The primary difference lies in the consequence of death. Choose the mode that best suits your playstyle and your tolerance for risk.
