Last Epoch offers players the choice between two distinct play modes: Offline and Online. This fundamental decision impacts how you interact with the game world, other players, and the overall experience. Understanding the differences between these modes is crucial for setting up your game according to your preferences and playstyle.

Online Play is the standard mode for most players seeking a connected experience. In this mode, your character data is stored on servers, allowing you to play with friends and engage in trading with other players. This is the only way to participate in the game's economy and interact with the global leaderboards. Online play requires a stable internet connection.

Key features of Online Play include:

• Multiplayer: Play with friends or join public games.
• Trading: Exchange items with other players through a dedicated trading system.
• Leaderboards: Compete for rankings in various endgame activities.
• Server Authority: Character data is managed server-side, ensuring a secure environment.
• Character Slot Limit: A maximum of 20 online character slots are available per account.

Offline Play provides a completely self-contained experience. This mode does not require an internet connection and allows for unlimited character creation. Your character data is stored locally on your computer, offering a private and uninterrupted gaming session.

Key features of Offline Play include:

• Single Player: No internet connection required.
• Unlimited Characters: Create as many characters as you desire.
• Local Storage: Character data is saved on your machine.
• No Trading or Leaderboards: Cannot interact with online features.

When starting a new character, you will be prompted to choose your Realm. The primary choice is between Cycle and Legacy. Cycles are seasonal resets that offer a fresh start with a new economy and leaderboards. Legacy realms contain characters and stashes from previous Cycles.

The choice between Offline and Online play is a personal one. If you value social interaction, trading, and competitive leaderboards, Online play is the way to go. If you prefer a private experience, want to experiment with numerous characters without restriction, or have unreliable internet, Offline play is an excellent option. Both modes offer the full Last Epoch campa and endgame content.
