Champion Select Strategy
Champion Select is arguably the most critical phase of any League of Legends match, setting the stage for your team's success or failure. A well-constructed team composition can overcome individual skill deficits, while a poorly chosen one can lead to an uphill battle from the start. This section will guide you through actionable steps to optimize your champion picks and bans.
Understanding Your Role and Team Composition
Before even considering specific champions, assess your role and the evolving team composition. Are you the primary damage dealer, the frontline tank, or the utility support? Your pick should complement what your teammates are leaning towards.
- Early Picks (First & Second Pick): If you're picking early, prioritize strong, versatile champions that are difficult to counter. Examples include champions with good wave clear, reliable crowd control (CC), or strong early game presence. Avoid highly niche or easily counterable picks unless you have a specific, pre-arranged team strategy.
- Late Picks (Last Pick): As a late picker, you have the advantage of seeing more of both team compositions. This is your opportunity to "counter-pick" an enemy champion or fill a crucial gap in your team's composition. For instance, if the enemy team has multiple squishy assassins, a strong peel support like Janna or Lulu could be invaluable.
The Ban Phase: Denying Power and Countering Threats
Bans are not just about removing "broken" champions from the game; they're a strategic tool to shape the match in your favor.
- Targeting "Meta" Picks: Keep an eye on the current meta. Champions that are overwhelmingly strong or have high win rates are often good ban targets. This prevents the enemy from easily accessing powerful options.
- Countering One-Trick-Ponies: If you notice an enemy player has a significantly high mastery score or win rate on a specific champion (e.g., a Platinum 5 Akali mentioned in the reference material), banning that champion can severely disrupt their game plan.
- Removing Direct Counters: If you plan to play a specific champion that has a very hard counter, consider banning that counter. For example, if you intend to play Yasuo mid, banning Malzahar might be a wise move.
- Team Synergy Bans: Sometimes, banning a champion that synergizes too well with an enemy's early pick can be effective. If the enemy locks in a strong engage tank, banning a follow-up damage dealer or a utility champion that enhances their engage could be beneficial.
Champion Selection: Beyond Just "Good" Picks
Your champion choice should consider several factors beyond just individual strength.
- Team Composition Balance:
- Damage Types: Aim for a mix of Attack Damage (AD) and Ability Power (AP) to prevent the enemy from stacking resistances too easily. A common pitfall is an all-AD team, which can be easily countered by a few Thornmail or Randuin's Omen purchases.
- Frontline/Backline: Ensure you have at least one reliable tank or bruiser to initiate fights and protect your carries. Conversely, don't pick five tanks; you'll lack damage.
- Crowd Control (CC): A healthy amount of CC (stuns, slows, roots, knock-ups) is crucial for engaging, peeling, and locking down enemy threats.
- Engage/Disengage: Does your team have a way to start fights effectively (e.g., Malphite ultimate, Leona engage) and/or disengage from unfavorable ones (e.g., Janna ultimate, Zilean speed boost)?
- Lane Matchups: Consider how your champion will perform against your direct lane opponent. While not always possible to perfectly counter, avoiding extremely unfavorable matchups can save you a lot of frustration. For instance, picking a short-ranged mage into a long-ranged poke champion can make the early game very difficult.
- Scaling: Does your team have a good mix of early, mid, and late-game scaling? An all-early game team might struggle if the game goes long, while an all-late game team might get snowballed on before they can come online.
- Player Comfort: Ultimately, playing a champion you are proficient with is often better than picking a "meta" champion you have no experience on. Communicate your comfort picks to your team.
Communication is Key
Utilize the chat in Champion Select! Discuss potential bans, your intended picks, and any concerns you have about the team composition. Proactive communication can prevent misunderstandings and lead to a more cohesive team strategy.
- "Pref [Champion Name]": Indicate your preferred champion early to signal your intentions.
- "Can fill [Role]": If you're flexible, let your team know you can play multiple roles.
- Asking for Swaps: If you have a later pick and want to counter-pick, ask an earlier picker if they can swap champions with you after the pick phase.
