2.2 Minions and Their Role

Minions are the backbone of League of Legends' early and mid-game economy and experience gain. These small, AI-controlled units march down each lane in waves, automatically attacking enemy minions, turrets, and champions. Understanding how to effectively farm minions, or 'last hit' them, is crucial for accumulating gold and experience, which directly translates into power spikes and the ability to purchase vital items. Denying your opponent these resources is just as important as securing them yourself.

Each minion wave consists of melee minions, caster minions, and a cannon minion (which appears less frequently but grants more gold and experience). Melee minions are the most numerous and provide a base amount of gold and experience. Caster minions, positioned behind the melee units, deal magic damage and offer slightly more resources. The cannon minion, with its slow but powerful ranged attack, is a high-priority target for last hitting due to its significant gold and experience reward. Prioritizing cannon minions can give you a substantial advantage over your lane opponent.

Beyond individual last hitting, understanding minion wave management is key. Pushing a wave means killing enemy minions quickly to build up a larger allied wave. This can force your opponent to farm under their turret, making them vulnerable to ganks, or it can pressure their turret. Freezing a wave involves killing enemy minions just as they are about to die, keeping the wave near your turret. This creates a safer farming environment for you and can bait aggressive opponents into dangerous positions. Conversely, letting waves crash into your turret can deny your opponent gold and experience if they are not present to farm them.

The gold earned from minions is the primary way to acquire items. Each melee minion grants 21 gold, caster minions 14 gold, and cannon minions 60 gold. Experience is also gained passively and by being near dying minions. A significant experience lead can allow you to out-level your opponent, granting you more ability ranks and stronger base stats, even if your gold income is similar. Mastering the art of last hitting and wave management is fundamental to climbing the ranks in League of Legends.
