Ranked Play

Ranked Play in League of Legends is the competitive ladder system where players test their skills against others of similar ability, striving to climb through various tiers and divisions. It's the heart of the game's competitive scene, offering a challenging and rewarding experience for those seeking to prove their mastery of the game.

The ranked system is structured into several tiers: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Emerald, Diamond, Master, Grandmaster, and Challenger. Each tier, except for Master and above, is further divided into four divisions (IV, III, II, I), with IV being the lowest and I being the highest within that tier. Players earn League Points (LP) for winning games and lose LP for losing games.

Promotional Series:

To move between divisions (e.g., from Silver IV to Silver III) or between tiers (e.g., from Silver I to Gold IV), players must complete a promotional series. Typically, this involves winning two out of three games or three out of five games, depending on the division/tier transition. Successfully winning the series promotes You to the next rank.

Matchmaking Rating (MMR):

Behind the visible LP system is a hidden Matchmaking Rating (MMR). This invisible score is what the game uses to determine your true skill level and match you with and against players of similar MMR. Your LP gains and losses are influenced by your MMR; if your MMR is higher than your visible rank, you'll gain more LP for wins and lose less for losses, and vice versa.

Ranked Queues:

  • Solo/Duo Queue: You can queue up alone or with one friend. This is the primary queue for determining individual skill.
  • Flex Queue: You can queue up in groups of 1, 2, 3, or 5. This queue is designed for teams who want to play together and practice team coordination. It has its own separate ranking.

Ranked Seasons and Splits:

League of Legends operates on a ranked season, which is typically divided into multiple splits. At the beginning of each new season, there is a rank reset, requiring players to play placement matches to determine their starting rank for that season. Splits often introduce new rewards and sometimes changes to the ranked system.

Benefits of Ranked Play:

  • Competitive Challenge: The thrill of competing against skilled opponents and improving your gameplay.
  • Sense of Accomplishment: Climbing the ladder and achieving higher ranks provides a tangible measure of progress.
  • Rewards: Players earn exclusive cosmetic rewards, such as Victorious skins, icons, and ward skins, based on their final rank at the end of each split or season.
  • Improved Skill: The focus on competition encourages players to learn more about the game, refine their mechanics, and develop better strategic thinking.

Ranked Play is where many players find the most engaging and fulfilling experience in League of Legends, pushing themselves to become better players and climb the ranks.
