Mid Lane: Mages, Assassins, Control Mages

Master the League of Legends mid lane with this guide to mages, assassins, and control mages. Learn how to dictate game pace and impact other lanes.

The mid lane in League of Legends is a pivotal role, often dictating the pace of the game through its influence on both the top and bottom lanes, as well as the jungle. Mid laners are typically high-damage dealers, capable of roaming and impacting other parts of the map. The champions in this role can be broadly categorized into mages, assassins, and control mages, each with distinct playstyles and objectives.

Mages

Mages are champions who primarily deal magic damage, often from a distance, using their abilities. They typically excel at wave clear, poke, and burst damage. Their goal is to farm safely, scale into the late game, and unleash devastating spell combos on their opponents.

  • Playstyle: Focus on farming minions, poking enemies down, and looking for opportunities to land their full ability rotation. They often build Ability Power (AP) items to maximize their damage output.
  • Strengths: High damage potential, strong wave clear, good poke, and often have crowd control abilities.
  • Weaknesses: Can be squishy and vulnerable to assassins or strong engage. Reliant on mana.
  • Examples: Lux, Orianna, Syndra, Viktor.

Assassins

Assassins are champions designed to quickly eliminate high-priority targets, usually squishy carries, with a burst of damage. They thrive on mobility, burst damage, and often have abilities that allow them to dive into the enemy backline and escape.

  • Playstyle: Focus on farming and looking for opportunities to pick off isolated targets or dive into team fights to eliminate key threats. They often build lethality or ability power for maximum burst.
  • Strengths: Extremely high single-target burst damage, excellent mobility, can snowball games quickly.
  • Weaknesses: Can be feast or famine; if they fall behind, they struggle to be effective. Often vulnerable if their engage is interrupted or they can't get a quick kill.
  • Examples: Zed, Akali, Katarina, Talon.

Control Mages

Control mages are a sub-category of mages that focus on zoning, area denial, and crowd control. While they still deal significant magic damage, their primary strength lies in their ability to dictate the flow of a fight and make it difficult for the enemy team to engage or maneuver effectively.

  • Playstyle: Focus on controlling space with their abilities, setting up plays for their team with crowd control, and dealing sustained damage from a safe distance.
  • Strengths: Excellent crowd control, strong area denial, good wave clear, can be very impactful in team fights.
  • Weaknesses: Often have longer cooldowns on their key abilities and can be vulnerable to aggressive dives.
  • Examples: Anivia, Orianna (can also be played as a control mage), Viktor, Cassiopeia.

Mid Lane Strategy

Regardless of champion type, mid laners have a significant impact on the map. After clearing their minion wave, they should constantly assess opportunities to roam. This involves helping their jungler with invades or ganks, or moving to the top or bot lane to secure kills or relieve pressure. Vision control in the river is paramount for mid laners, as it allows them to safely push waves and provides early warning of incoming ganks from the enemy jungler. Mastering the mid lane requires a blend of mechanical skill, game knowledge, and map awareness.
