Understanding Runes: Your Pre-Game Power Spikes
Runes are a crucial pre-game customization system that significantly impacts your champion's playstyle and power curve. Choosing the right runes can give you an early game advantage, enhance your scaling, or provide utility that perfectly complements your champion and team composition. Think of them as specialized enhancements that tailor your champion to specific roles and situations.
The Rune Page System
Before each match, you'll select a Rune Page. You can create and save multiple custom pages, or choose from pre-set options. It's highly recommended to create custom pages for your main champions and roles, as these offer the most strategic flexibility.
- Accessing Rune Pages: From the League of Legends client, navigate to the "Collection" tab, then select "Runes." Here you can view, edit, and create new rune pages.
- Creating a New Page: Click the "+" icon to create a new page. You'll be prompted to choose a Primary Path and a Secondary Path.
Primary and Secondary Paths: The Core of Your Strategy
Each Rune Page consists of a Primary Path and a Secondary Path. These paths determine the types of runes you can select and provide unique stat bonuses.
Primary Path Selection
Your Primary Path is the most impactful choice, as it grants a Keystone Rune and three additional runes. There are five distinct paths, each offering a different strategic focus:
- Precision: Focuses on sustained damage, attack speed, and healing. Ideal for Attack Damage Carries (ADCs) and certain bruisers.
- Keystone Examples:
- Conqueror: Grants stacking Adaptive Force and heals for a portion of damage dealt when fully stacked. Excellent for extended trades and champions who can sustain combat.
- Lethal Tempo: Provides a massive burst of attack speed after damaging an enemy, breaking the attack speed cap. Perfect for hyper-scaling ADCs.
- Press the Attack: After hitting an enemy 3 times, they become vulnerable, taking increased damage from all sources. Great for burst champions and those who can quickly proc it.
- Keystone Examples:
- Domination: Emphasizes burst damage, mobility, and target access. Popular among assassins and aggressive junglers.
- Keystone Examples:
- Electrocute: Deals a burst of adaptive damage after hitting an enemy with 3 separate attacks or abilities within a short duration. Classic for assassins.
- Dark Harvest: Collects Soul Essence from damaged champions, empowering your next attack or ability to deal bonus adaptive damage. Scales well in games with frequent skirmishes.
- Hail of Blades: Grants a burst of attack speed for your first 3 attacks on an enemy champion. Excellent for champions who rely on quick auto-attack trades.
- Keystone Examples:
- Sorcery: Enhances ability power, resource management, and ability haste. A go-to for mages and utility supports.
- Keystone Examples:
- Summon Aery: Your attacks and abilities send Aery to an ally or enemy, shielding allies or damaging enemies. Versatile for both damage and utility.
- Arcane Comet: Hitting a champion with an ability hurls a comet at their location, dealing adaptive damage. Good for poke champions.
- Phase Rush: Hitting a champion with 3 separate attacks or abilities grants a burst of movement speed and slow resistance. Great for repositioning and escaping.
- Keystone Examples:
- Resolve: Boosts durability, crowd control, and healing/shielding. Essential for tanks, bruisers, and engage supports.
- Keystone Examples:
- Grasp of the Undying: Every 4 seconds in combat, your next attack on a champion deals bonus magic damage, heals you, and permanently increases your health. Top lane staple for tanks.
- Aftershock: After immobilizing an enemy champion, gain bonus resistances and then deal adaptive damage in an area around you. Perfect for engage supports and tanks with CC.
- Guardian: Protects nearby allied champions. If you or a protected ally take damage, both are shielded. Ideal for defensive supports.
- Keystone Examples:
- Inspiration: Provides unique utility, item interactions, and creative solutions. Often used by champions who benefit from unconventional approaches.
- Keystone Examples:
- Glacial Augment: Immobilizing an enemy champion causes 3 glacial rays to emanate from them, slowing enemies. Also slows enemies hit by item actives. Great for utility and peel.
- Unsealed Spellbook: Allows you to swap one of your summoner spells to a different one after a cooldown. Offers incredible strategic flexibility.
- First Strike: Damaging an enemy champion before they damage you grants bonus gold and empowers your next attack or ability to deal bonus true damage. Excellent for champions with strong poke or burst.
- Keystone Examples:
Secondary Path Selection
Your Secondary Path allows you to choose two additional runes from a different path than your primary. This provides a minor stat bonus based on the chosen paths and allows for further customization.
- Strategic Pairing: Consider how your secondary path complements your primary. For example, a Precision primary for damage might be paired with Resolve secondary for added durability, or Domination for more burst.
- Stat Bonuses: The specific stat bonus (e.g., Adaptive Force, Attack Speed, Health) granted by your secondary path is displayed when you select it. Choose one that further enhances your champion's strengths or mitigates weaknesses.
Adaptive Shards: Fine-Tuning Your Stats
Below your rune selections, you'll find three rows of "Adaptive Shards." These provide small, flat stat bonuses that can be crucial for early game power or scaling.
- Row 1 (Offensive): Typically offers Adaptive Force (AP or AD, whichever is higher), Attack Speed, or Ability Haste.
- Strategy: Choose based on your champion's primary damage source and scaling. Most ADCs will take Attack Speed, while mages will take Adaptive Force.
- Row 2 (Flex): Often provides Armor, Magic Resist, or Health.
- Strategy: This is your defensive flex slot. If you're facing an AD heavy team, take Armor. Against AP heavy, take Magic Resist. If the enemy team is balanced or you need general survivability, Health is a safe bet.
- Row 3 (Defensive): Similar to Row 2, offering Armor, Magic Resist, or Health.
- Strategy: Use this to further solidify your defenses against the enemy team's primary damage type or to simply gain more health for general tankiness.
Actionable Walkthrough: Setting Up Your Rune Page
- Identify Your Champion and Role: What champion are you playing? What role are you filling (e.g., ADC, Mage, Tank, Assassin)?
- Analyze the Enemy Team Composition: Are they AD-heavy or AP-heavy? Do they have a lot of crowd control? Are they early-game focused or late-game scaling?
- Choose Your Primary Path: Based on your champion's core identity and the desired playstyle, select the most appropriate primary path.
- Example: Playing Kai'Sa (ADC)? Precision is a strong choice for sustained damage.
- Select Your Keystone Rune: Within your primary path, pick the keystone that best synergizes with your champion's abilities and your game plan.
- Example (Kai'Sa): Lethal Tempo for hyper-scaling attack speed, or Press the Attack for burst and team utility.
- Fill Out Primary Path Runes: Choose the three remaining runes in your primary path that enhance your keystone or provide valuable stats/effects.
- Example (Kai'Sa, Precision): Presence of Mind for mana, Legend: Alacrity for attack speed, Coup de Grace for execute damage.
- Choose Your Secondary Path: Select a secondary path that complements your primary choice or addresses a specific need.
- Example (Kai'Sa): Domination for Sudden Impact (lethality/magic penetration after dash) and Treasure Hunter (bonus gold for takedowns), or Inspiration for Magical Footwear (free boots) and Future's Market (go into debt for items).
- Fill Out Secondary Path Runes: Pick the two runes from your secondary path.
- Select Adaptive Shards:
- Offensive: Most ADCs will take Attack Speed. Mages will take Adaptive Force.
- Flex & Defensive: Adjust these based on the enemy team. If they have a strong AP mid and AP jungler, consider taking Magic Resist in both slots. If they are mostly AD, take Armor. If balanced, a mix or health is fine.
- Save Your Rune Page: Give it a clear name (e.g., "Kai'Sa Lethal Tempo AD") so you can easily find it in champion select.
In-Game Adjustments (Champion Select)
Even if you have pre-made pages, always review them in champion select. The enemy team composition is revealed, allowing for last-minute adjustments to your secondary path or adaptive shards to counter specific threats.
- Quick Swaps: In the champion select screen, click on your selected rune page. You can quickly change individual runes or even swap entire paths if needed.
- Counter-Picking Shards: If you see a heavy AP threat, ensure you have Magic Resist shards. If you're against a strong early-game AD champion, prioritize Armor.
