Objective Prioritization
Understanding and executing proper objective prioritization is paramount to consistently winning games in League of Legends. It's not just about getting kills; it's about converting those kills, or even just pressure, into tangible map advantages that lead to victory. This section will break down how to think about and act on objectives throughout the game.
Early Game (0-15 Minutes): Setting the Stage
The early game is about securing initial advantages and setting up for mid-game plays. Your focus here should be on lane dominance and vision control around key objectives.
- Lane Minions: This is your primary source of gold and experience. Don't underestimate the power of a good CS (Creep Score) lead. Aim for perfect CS whenever possible, but don't sacrifice safe farming for a few extra minions if it puts you at risk.
- First Blood Tower (Turret Plating): Securing the first tower in any lane grants a significant gold bonus to your team (160 gold per player, plus 50 gold per plate destroyed). Focus on pushing waves and chipping away at enemy turrets, especially if your lane opponent is absent or you have a numbers advantage.
- Rift Herald (First Spawn): The first Rift Herald spawns at 8 minutes. This objective is incredibly powerful for taking down early towers.
- Strategy: Coordinate with your jungler and mid laner. If you can secure a kill in top or mid, or force the enemy jungler away, it's an excellent opportunity.
- Execution: Once secured, deploy Herald in a lane with exposed turret plates or a low-health turret. Aim for the outer turrets first.
- Dragon (Infernal, Mountain, Ocean, Cloud): The first dragon spawns at 5 minutes. While not as immediately impactful as Rift Herald for tower taking, early dragons provide permanent stat bonuses that scale throughout the game.
- Strategy: Prioritize dragons if you have lane priority in bot lane and your jungler is nearby. Vision control around the dragon pit is crucial.
- Type Awareness: Understand which dragon spawns. An early Infernal Dragon (bonus AD/AP) can be a significant power spike for your damage dealers, while an Ocean Dragon (health regen) provides sustain.
Mid Game (15-25 Minutes): Expanding Your Lead
The mid game is characterized by more frequent team fights and a shift towards securing larger, more impactful objectives. Vision control becomes even more critical.
- Outer Turrets: Continue to push down remaining outer turrets. Each turret provides global gold and opens up more of the enemy jungle for vision and control.
- Rift Herald (Second Spawn): If the game is still in the mid-game when the second Rift Herald spawns (around 14 minutes if the first was taken early), it can be used to crack open inner turrets or even an inhibitor turret.
- Strategy: Similar to the first, but be more mindful of enemy rotations as team fights are more common.
- Dragon Stacks: Continue to prioritize dragons. Reaching 3 dragon stacks provides a significant buff, and securing the Dragon Soul (4th dragon of a unique type) is often a game-ending advantage.
- Vision: Place deep wards in the enemy jungle and around the dragon pit to track enemy movements and prevent steals.
- Team Fights: Be prepared to fight for dragons. Often, securing a dragon will involve a skirmish or full-blown team fight.
- Inner Turrets: Once outer turrets are down, focus on inner turrets. These provide even more gold and open up the enemy base.
Late Game (25+ Minutes): Closing Out the Game
The late game is all about securing Baron Nashor, Elder Dragon, and inhibitors to push for the Nexus. Mistakes here are heavily punished.
- Baron Nashor: Spawns at 20 minutes. Baron buff (Baron's Might) empowers minions and provides significant AD/AP, making it incredibly easy to push turrets and inhibitors.
- Strategy: Only attempt Baron after securing a significant numbers advantage (e.g., 2-3 enemy champions dead) or if you have overwhelming vision control and the enemy team is far away.
- Vision: Clear enemy vision around the Baron pit and place your own control wards.
- Execution: Have your highest damage dealers focus Baron, while others zone the enemy or provide peel. Be prepared for a contested fight.
- Inhibitors: Destroying an inhibitor spawns Super Minions in that lane, which are much stronger and harder to kill, putting immense pressure on the enemy base.
- Strategy: Use Baron buff to push down inhibitors. Prioritize lanes that are already pushed or have an exposed inhibitor turret.
- "Baron Power Play": After securing Baron, group as 5 and push down an inhibitor, then rotate to another lane if possible.
- Elder Dragon: Spawns 6 minutes after the Dragon Soul is taken, or 35 minutes into the game if no Soul has been taken. Elder Dragon buff (Aspect of the Dragon) provides a powerful burn effect on attacks and abilities, and instantly executes enemies below a certain health threshold.
- Strategy: Elder Dragon is often the final objective that secures victory. It's a high-risk, high-reward objective. Only attempt if you have a clear advantage or can force a favorable fight.
- Team Fight: Expect a full 5v5 team fight for Elder Dragon. Position carefully and use all available resources.
- Nexus Turrets & Nexus: These are the final objectives. Once inhibitors are down, push directly for the Nexus.
- Strategy: Group as 5, clear super minions, and focus fire on the Nexus turrets, then the Nexus itself.
- Backdoor: In some rare situations, a single champion with high damage and mobility might be able to "backdoor" the Nexus if the enemy team is distracted elsewhere. This is a risky play but can win games.
