Okada Izo (First Encounter)

Chapter 2: The Price of Loyalty

Your first true test in Like a Dragon: Ishin! comes in the form of Okada Izo, a ruthless Tosa Loyalist and a master swordsman. This encounter serves as a crucial tutorial in understanding enemy attack tells, parrying, and effectively utilizing your combat styles. Don't underestimate him; Izo is fast, aggressive, and can punish mistakes severely.

Location & Context

You'll face Izo at the end of Chapter 2, after a tense confrontation in the streets of Kyo. The fight takes place in a relatively open area, allowing for some maneuverability, but the focus will be on direct engagement.

Recommended Loadout & Preparation

  • Weapon: Any Katana you have acquired up to this point will suffice. Ensure it's upgraded as much as possible at the Blacksmith. A basic Steel Katana or Iron Katana is usually available.
  • Armor: Equip the best available armor. Early game, this might be simple Cloth Kimono or Leather Vest. Focus on defense.
  • Healing Items: Stock up on Healing Medicine (Small/Medium) and at least one Revival Medicine if you have it. You can purchase these from various vendors in Kyo.
  • Heat Gauge Management: Consider equipping a Trooper Card that passively builds Heat or boosts attack power if available.

Combat Styles & Strategy

Izo is a fast, aggressive opponent who primarily uses a single katana. He will test your ability to read attacks and switch styles effectively. Your primary styles for this fight will be Swordsman and Wild Dancer.

Phase 1: Learning the Ropes (100% - 60% Health)

  • Primary Style: Swordsman
    • Focus: Parrying and Countering. Izo's attacks are telegraphed enough to parry with practice. The Swordsman style's guard and parry are your best friends here.
    • Izo's Main Attacks:
      • Standard Combo: A quick 2-3 hit sword combo. Block or parry the first hit, then counter-attack.
      • Overhead Slash: A slower, more powerful single strike. This is a prime candidate for a perfect parry (L1/LB just before impact) to stun him.
      • Dash Attack: He'll often dash forward with a quick horizontal slash. This is harder to parry due to its speed, so dodging sideways is often safer.
    • Strategy: Stay defensive. Block his standard combos. When you see an opening, especially after a successful parry, unleash a quick combo of your own. Don't overcommit; Izo recovers quickly. Build up your Heat Gauge.

Phase 2: Increased Aggression (60% - 30% Health)

  • Primary Style: Wild Dancer
    • Focus: Evasion and Area Control. As Izo's health drops, he becomes more aggressive and starts incorporating wider, more damaging swings.
    • New Attacks:
      • Spinning Attack: A wide, sweeping attack that covers a larger area. This is best dodged by rolling backward or through him with Wild Dancer.
      • Charged Thrust: He'll sometimes charge up a powerful thrust. This is a good opportunity for a sidestep and a quick counter.
    • Strategy: Switch to Wild Dancer. Use its rapid dodges (X/A + direction) to weave around his attacks. The style's wide-sweeping attacks are good for hitting him if he tries to create distance. Look for opportunities to use Heat Actions, especially the ones that stun or deal significant damage.
      • Heat Action Tip: If you have enough Heat, a well-timed Heat Action can interrupt his more dangerous attacks and provide a moment of respite.

Phase 3: Desperation & Finish Him! (30% - 0% Health)

  • Primary Style: Swordsman / Wild Dancer (situational)
    • Focus: Finish him quickly. Izo will be at his most dangerous, often chaining together his strongest attacks.
    • Strategy:
      • If you're confident in your parrying, stick with Swordsman for the high damage output after a successful parry.
      • If you're low on health or prefer to play it safe, use Wild Dancer to maintain distance and chip away at his remaining health.
      • Don't be afraid to use your healing items. Better safe than sorry.
      • Unleash any remaining Heat Actions. This is the time to go all out.

Common Pitfalls & Tips

  • Don't Get Greedy: After landing a combo, be prepared to block or dodge immediately. Izo punishes over-extension.
  • Manage Your Heat: Don't hoard your Heat Gauge. Use Heat Actions when you have good openings, especially in Phase 2 and 3, to deal burst damage or interrupt his attacks.
  • Practice Parrying: The first Izo fight is an excellent opportunity to hone your parrying skills. A successful parry often leads to a significant opening.
  • Utilize the Environment (Limited): While the area is open, there aren't many environmental hazards to use. Focus on direct combat.
  • Stay Centered: Try not to get cornered against walls, as this limits your dodging options.
