Heat Actions & Special Moves
Heat Actions are your ultimate combat tools in Like a Dragon: Ishin!, allowing Ryoma to unleash devastating, cinematic attacks on his foes. These powerful moves are crucial for turning the tide of battle, especially against tougher opponents and bosses. Mastering their activation and understanding their various effects will significantly enhance your combat prowess.
Understanding the Heat Gauge
The core of Heat Actions lies in your Heat Gauge, located in the lower-left corner of the screen during combat. This gauge fills up as you:
- Land successful attacks on enemies.
- Successfully parry or dodge enemy attacks.
- Taunt enemies (press the directional pad's Up button).
- Consume specific items like the Heat Amulet or Heat Drink. These can be purchased from various vendors, such as the General Store in Teramachi Street or the Umai Udon stall in Shinmachi.
Once your Heat Gauge reaches a certain threshold (indicated by a glowing blue aura around Ryoma and a full segment of the gauge), you'll be able to perform Heat Actions. Some Heat Actions require more Heat segments than others, so always keep an eye on your gauge.
Executing Heat Actions
When a Heat Action is available, an on-screen prompt (usually a specific button, often Triangle on PlayStation controllers) will appear. The prompt's appearance depends on several factors:
- Enemy State: Is the enemy stunned, knocked down, or grappling you?
- Ryoma's Position: Are you near a wall, a weapon, or another environmental object?
- Equipped Style: Each combat style (Wild Dancer, Swordsman, Gunman, Brawler) has unique Heat Actions.
- Weapon Type: Holding a specific weapon (e.g., a katana, a spear, or a pistol) can unlock weapon-specific Heat Actions.
To execute a Heat Action, simply press the prompted button when it appears. Be quick, as these prompts often have a short window of opportunity.
General Heat Action Strategies
- Prioritize High-Damage Actions: Against bosses or heavily armored enemies, aim for Heat Actions that deal significant damage. Many of these involve environmental interactions or weapon finishers.
- Crowd Control: Some Heat Actions are excellent for clearing groups of weaker enemies. Look for prompts that involve sweeping attacks or throws.
- Exploit Weaknesses: Certain Heat Actions can bypass enemy guards or inflict status effects. Experiment to find what works best against different enemy types.
- Environmental Awareness: Always be mindful of your surroundings. Heat Actions involving walls, signs, or even other enemies can be incredibly powerful. For example, the "Wall Crush" Heat Action (available in Brawler style near a wall) can deal massive damage and potentially stun multiple foes.
- Item Usage: Don't hesitate to use Heat Amulets or Heat Drinks during challenging encounters to quickly build your gauge and unleash a critical Heat Action. These are particularly useful in boss fights where sustained damage is key.
Style-Specific Heat Actions (Examples)
Each of Ryoma's combat styles offers a distinct set of Heat Actions. Here are a few notable examples to get you started:
Swordsman Style
- Essence of the Blade: A powerful, multi-hit sword attack that can be initiated when an enemy is stunned or guarding. Often appears as a Triangle prompt after a successful combo.
- Essence of the Quickdraw: If you've just dodged an attack and an enemy is vulnerable, this Heat Action allows for a swift, precise counter-attack with your katana.
- Essence of the Impaling Strike: When an enemy is knocked down, approach them for a Triangle prompt to deliver a finishing blow.
Gunman Style
- Essence of the Rapid Fire: Unleash a barrage of pistol shots on a single target, especially effective against enemies with low health or those trying to flee.
- Essence of the Headshot: When an enemy is momentarily dazed, a precise headshot Heat Action can deal critical damage.
- Essence of the Ricochet: If an enemy is positioned near a wall or another hard surface, this Heat Action can bounce a bullet off the surface for a surprise attack or to hit multiple targets.
Wild Dancer Style
- Essence of the Spinning Dragon: A wide-sweeping attack with both sword and pistol, excellent for clearing out multiple enemies surrounding Ryoma. Often available when surrounded by 3 or more foes.
- Essence of the Twin Blades: A rapid, acrobatic attack that combines sword slashes and pistol shots, ideal for quickly dispatching a single, tough opponent.
- Essence of the Aerial Dance: After launching an enemy into the air, a timely Triangle prompt allows Ryoma to follow up with a devastating aerial combo.
Brawler Style
- Essence of the Tiger Drop: A classic counter-attack that requires precise timing. Press Triangle just as an enemy's attack is about to land to unleash a powerful, unblockable counter. This is one of the most potent Heat Actions in the game.
- Essence of the Ground Pound: When an enemy is on the ground, this Heat Action allows Ryoma to stomp on them, dealing significant damage and preventing them from getting up quickly.
- Essence of the Wall Slam: Grapple an enemy (Circle button) and then move them towards a wall. A Triangle prompt will appear to slam them into the surface, causing heavy damage.
Remember to practice these actions in various combat scenarios to truly master them. The more you use Heat Actions, the more efficient and stylish your combat will become!
