Relationship System
In Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, building strong relationships with your crew and various NPCs across Honolulu is crucial for unlocking powerful abilities, side quests, and even unique gear. This system goes beyond simple dialogue choices, requiring active engagement and strategic gift-giving.
Understanding Relationship Levels
Each character you can form a relationship with has a Relationship Level, ranging from 1 to 5. You can view a character's current Relationship Level and their progress towards the next level by accessing the "Crew & Contacts" tab in your main menu. A higher level typically means better benefits.
- Level 1: Acquaintance - Basic interactions, minor dialogue options.
- Level 2: Ally - Unlocks basic support abilities in combat, some minor side quests.
- Level 3: Confidant - Significant combat bonuses, access to more complex side stories, and unique item discounts.
- Level 4: Trusted Friend - Powerful passive abilities, access to character-specific Heat Actions, and rare item rewards.
- Level 5: Sworn Brother/Sister - Maximum benefits, including ultimate abilities, exclusive gear, and the completion of their personal storyline.
Increasing Relationship Levels
There are several ways to deepen your bonds with the colorful cast of Hawaii. Consistency and understanding each character's preferences are key.
1. Engaging in Dialogue
Simply speaking to characters regularly will provide a small boost to their relationship meter. Look for characters with a speech bubble icon above their heads on the mini-map. These often indicate new dialogue options or story progression related to their character arc.
- Key Dialogue Choices: During certain conversations, you'll be presented with choices. Selecting the option that aligns with the character's personality or moral compass will yield a larger relationship boost. For example, with the stoic pirate captain, "Kaimana," choosing direct and honorable responses will be more effective than flippant remarks.
2. Gift Giving
Gifts are the most direct and often most effective way to increase Relationship Levels. Each character has preferred categories of items, and giving them something they truly appreciate will provide a substantial boost. Generic gifts offer a small increase, while disliked items can even slightly decrease progress.
- Preferred Gift Categories:
- Ichiban Kasuga: Loves anything related to "Heroism" or "Japanese Culture."
- Recommended Items: Hero's Bandana (purchased from Aloha Souvenirs in Waikiki), Authentic Samurai Katana Replica (found in the Pearl Harbor Museum gift shop after completing the "History Buff" substory), Vintage Manga Collection (reward for completing "The Otaku's Quest" substory).
- Kaimana (Pirate Captain): Prefers "Practical Tools" and "Rare Rum."
- Recommended Items: Master Crafting Kit (available at the Blacksmith in Downtown Honolulu), Aged Kraken Rum (rare drop from defeating the Kraken mini-boss, or occasionally sold at the Hidden Cove Tavern), Navigational Sextant (found in a treasure chest on the Diamond Head summit).
- Chitose Fujinomiya: Appreciates "Luxury Goods" and "Fashion Accessories."
- Recommended Items: Designer Handbag (purchased from the high-end boutique in Kahala Mall), Pearl Necklace (reward for winning the "High Roller Poker" tournament at the Honolulu Casino), Exotic Orchid Bouquet (grown at the Botanical Garden after reaching Garden Level 3).
- Adachi Koichi: Enjoys "Comfort Food" and "Detective Gadgets."
- Recommended Items: Hawaiian Plate Lunch Deluxe (bought from any local diner), High-Tech Binoculars (purchased from the electronics store in Chinatown), Strong Coffee Beans (found at the Kona Coffee Plantation).
- Ichiban Kasuga: Loves anything related to "Heroism" or "Japanese Culture."
- Where to Find Gifts:
- Shops: Most general stores, souvenir shops, and specialized boutiques will carry several gift items.
- Substory Rewards: Many side quests offer unique or rare items that are highly valued as gifts.
- Treasure Chests/Exploration: Keep an eye out for hidden chests and sparkling spots in the environment; these often contain valuable gifts.
- Minigames: Winning certain minigames, like fishing or mahjong, can sometimes reward you with high-value gift items.
3. Completing Substories and Character Quests
Each major character has a series of personal substories that delve deeper into their background and motivations. Completing these quests not only provides significant relationship boosts but also often unlocks powerful unique abilities or special gear. These quests are typically marked with a blue exclamation mark on your map.
- Example: Completing Kaimana's "Lost Compass" questline, which involves retrieving his family heirloom from a rival pirate crew, will grant a massive relationship boost and unlock the "Tidal Wave Heat Action" for him in combat.
4. Combat Participation
Having characters in your active party during combat and performing well can also contribute to their relationship. Using their unique skills, performing tag-team attacks, and healing them when they're in danger will show your camaraderie and slightly increase their bond.
- Specific Actions: Successfully executing a Tag-Team Heat Action with a character provides a small bonus. Using a High-Grade Health Drink on a critically injured ally also grants a minor boost.
Relationship Benefits
The rewards for cultivating strong relationships are substantial and will significantly aid your journey through Hawaii.
- Combat Bonuses: Increased attack, defense, and elemental resistances for that character. Unlocks powerful Heat Actions and Ultimate Skills.
- Passive Abilities: Characters may grant passive benefits to the entire party, such as increased item drop rates, reduced shop prices, or faster experience gain.
- Exclusive Gear: High Relationship Levels often unlock unique weapons, armor, or accessories that are unobtainable elsewhere. For example, reaching Relationship Level 5 with Chitose might unlock the "Empress's Charm" accessory, boosting your charisma and luck.
- Substory Progression: Many crucial substories and even parts of the main story are gated behind certain Relationship Levels with key characters.
- Shop Discounts: Some shopkeepers or vendors will offer discounts on their goods once you've built a strong relationship with them. Look for the "Friendly Discount" indicator when browsing their inventory.
Invest time in your relationships, and you'll find your crew becoming an unstoppable force, ready to take on any challenge the Hawaiian seas throw your way!
