Basic Combat
Welcome to the sun-drenched, fist-flying world of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii! While the Hawaiian beaches are beautiful, you'll often find yourself in a brawl. Mastering the basics of combat is crucial for survival and for looking good while doing it. This section will guide you through the fundamental mechanics.
Engaging in Combat
Most street encounters in Honolulu, Hawaii, begin when you get too close to a group of hostile individuals, typically marked with a red indicator above their heads. You can also initiate combat by attacking an unsuspecting enemy from behind for a valuable first strike advantage.
- Approach & Engage: Simply walk up to an enemy group. The camera will shift, and the fight will begin.
- Surprise Attack: Sneak up behind an enemy and press Square (PS5) or X (Xbox Series) to land a powerful opening blow, often stunning multiple foes. This is highly recommended for tougher groups.
- Environmental Triggers: Some fights are triggered by story events or entering specific areas, like the back alleys of Waikiki Beach or the docks of Pearl Harbor.
Your Basic Arsenal
Your primary tools in combat are your fists, feet, and anything you can pick up. Understanding the different attack types is key to chaining combos and dealing maximum damage.
- Light Attacks (Square / X): These are quick, low-damage attacks that form the foundation of most combos. Use them to set up heavier hits or to interrupt weaker enemy attacks. A string of light attacks often ends in a powerful finisher.
- Heavy Attacks (Triangle / Y): Slower but more damaging, heavy attacks are excellent for breaking enemy guards or launching them into the air. They can also be charged by holding the button for increased power.
- Grabs (Circle / B): When close to an enemy, you can grab them. From a grab, you can:
- Throw: Press Circle / B again to throw the enemy, often into other opponents or environmental hazards.
- Pummel: Press Square / X repeatedly to land several quick hits.
- Environmental Attacks: While holding an enemy, you can often interact with nearby objects (e.g., slamming them into a lamppost or throwing them off a pier). Look for prompts!
- Dodging & Blocking (L1 / LB):
- Block: Hold L1 / LB to reduce incoming damage. This is essential against strong single attacks.
- Dodge: Tap L1 / LB while moving to quickly evade attacks. A perfectly timed dodge can lead to a "Perfect Dodge," creating an opening for a counter-attack.
Heat Actions: Your Signature Moves
As you fight, your "Heat Gauge" (the blue bar below your health) will fill. Once a segment is full, you can unleash devastating "Heat Actions" by pressing Triangle / Y when prompted. These are cinematic, high-damage attacks that vary depending on your position, enemy state, and surrounding environment. For example:
- Heat Action: Wall Smash: When an enemy is near a wall and your Heat Gauge is full, you might see a prompt to slam them into it.
- Heat Action: Weapon Finish: If you're holding a weapon (like a Traffic Cone or a Bicycle) and an enemy is stunned, a Heat Action prompt could appear for a powerful finishing blow.
- Heat Action: Essence of Pummeling: A basic Heat Action available when an enemy is on the ground.
Experiment with different situations to discover all the unique Heat Actions available to you. They are crucial for dealing with tougher enemies and bosses.
Environmental Weapons
Hawaii is full of useful objects you can turn into weapons. Look for glowing items in the environment. Press Circle / B to pick them up.
- Common Items: Street Signs, Bicycles, Chairs, Beer Bottles, and even Pineapples can be used.
- Usage: Once equipped, your light and heavy attacks will incorporate the weapon. Weapons have durability and will eventually break.
- Heat Actions with Weapons: Many powerful Heat Actions require a specific environmental weapon. For instance, using a Baseball Bat on a downed enemy can trigger a unique Heat Action.
Healing and Recovery
manage your health! You can carry various healing items in your inventory. Access your inventory during combat by pressing Up on the D-Pad.
- Staminan X: A basic health recovery drink, often found in convenience stores like the local "Aloha Mart" in Waikiki.
- Tauriner: Recovers a significant portion of your health and some Heat. Excellent for mid-fight boosts.
- Bento Boxes: Found in various eateries around Honolulu, these offer substantial health recovery.
Always keep a few healing items on hand, especially before tackling major story encounters or venturing into areas known for tougher enemies, such as the gang-controlled docks near the Aloha Tower Marketplace.
