Chapter 1: The First Loop

Welcome, aspiring hero, to the desolate world of Loop Hero! Chapter 1, aptly titled "The First Loop," serves as your foundational training ground. Here, you'll not only confront the Lich's initial corruption but also learn the critical mechanics of tile placement, resource management, and strategic combat that will define your entire journey. Don't underestimate this first chapter; mastering its rhythm is key to progressing through the more challenging acts ahead.

Understanding Your First Expedition

Your primary objective in Chapter 1 is to gather enough resources and strength to summon and defeat the Lich, the first major boss. This isn't a race; it's a marathon of careful planning and adaptation. Each loop around the path will present new challenges and opportunities.

Common Enemies and Early Combat Tips

You'll primarily encounter three basic enemy types in Chapter 1:

  • Ghouls: These undead foes are straightforward. They have moderate health and damage. Focus on out-damaging them with your starting gear.
  • Spiders: Spiders are weaker individually but often appear in groups, especially when you place Spider Cocoons. Their high attack speed can be problematic if you're not careful. Prioritize defeating them quickly to minimize incoming damage.
  • Slimes: Slimes have low health but can split into smaller slimes upon defeat, effectively increasing the number of enemies you face. Area-of-effect (AoE) damage or high single-target damage to quickly eliminate the initial slime before it splits is beneficial.

Early Combat Strategy: In the initial loops, your gear will be basic. Focus on equipping items that boost your damage (e.g., Swords) and provide some defense (e.g., Shields, Armor). Don't be afraid to retreat to your camp if your health gets too low; it's better to preserve your resources and try again than to die and lose a significant portion of your hard-earned materials.

Essential Tile Placement Strategies for Chapter 1

Tile placement is the heart of Loop Hero. Understanding how to use tiles effectively in Chapter 1 will set you up for success. Remember, every tile has a purpose, and strategic placement can turn the tide of battle and resource generation.

Resource Generation Tiles

  • Meadows: These are your bread and butter for early healing. Place them frequently, but strategically. A Meadow placed adjacent to any other tile (except another Meadow) transforms into a "Blooming Meadow," which heals for an additional 1 HP per day. Aim to create as many Blooming Meadows as possible without cluttering your path too much.
  • Rocks & Mountains: These tiles provide vital Stone resources. Placing 9 Rocks/Mountains in a 3x3 grid creates a "Mountain Peak," which grants even more Stone and a significant HP boost to your hero. However, Mountain Peaks also spawn Harpies, which are tougher enemies. In Chapter 1, focus on placing individual Rocks and Mountains to gather Stone without immediately creating a Peak unless you feel confident in your combat abilities.
  • Forests & Thickets: These tiles provide Wood. Forests boost your attack speed, while Thickets provide even more attack speed. Place them to enhance your combat effectiveness, especially against faster enemies like Spiders.

Enemy Spawning & Utility Tiles

  • Cemeteries: Placing a Cemetery on the path will spawn a Skeleton every two days. Skeletons are similar to Ghouls but can be slightly tougher. Use Cemeteries to increase enemy density and thus item drops, but don't overdo it early on.
  • Spider Cocoons: These spawn Spiders. Like Cemeteries, they increase enemy encounters and item drops. Be wary of placing too many too early, as swarms of Spiders can overwhelm an undergeared hero.
  • Vampire Mansions: Placing a Vampire Mansion adjacent to a Road tile will turn a nearby Village into a "Ransacked Village" and spawn a Vampire. Vampires are strong enemies with lifesteal. While they offer good loot, avoid them until you have decent gear. After a few loops, a Ransacked Village will transform into a "Count's Land," which provides better quests and healing.
  • Villages: These are crucial for healing and quests. Each time you pass through a Village, you heal a percentage of your HP and can complete a quest for a reward. Place them strategically to ensure you have healing available before tough sections of the loop.

Early Resource Management and Prioritization

Resources are the backbone of your camp upgrades and overall progression. In Chapter 1, focus on gathering a balanced amount of the core resources:

  • Orb of Unity: Obtained from defeating multiple enemies of the same type. Essential for many early camp upgrades.
  • Stable Wood: Primarily from Forests/Thickets. Needed for building and upgrading structures like the Herbalist's Hut.
  • Preserved Rock: Primarily from Rocks/Mountains. Used for structures like the Field Kitchen.
  • Food Supply: Obtained from Meadows and defeating certain enemies. Crucial for the Field Kitchen.

Prioritization: Initially, prioritize Stable Wood and Preserved Rock to unlock essential camp upgrades. Orbs of Unity will come naturally as you defeat enemies.

Beneficial Early Camp Upgrades for Chapter 1

Your camp is your persistent progression system. Investing in the right upgrades early can significantly ease your Chapter 1 runs.

  • Field Kitchen: This is arguably the most important early upgrade. It allows you to craft Potions of Healing, which are invaluable for surviving longer loops and tougher encounters. Prioritize this as soon as you have the necessary Preserved Rock and Food Supply.
  • Herbalist's Hut: This structure increases the healing potency of your Potions of Healing. A strong second priority after the Field Kitchen, as it directly improves your survivability.
  • Supply Depot: Unlocks the ability to bring supply items on expeditions. While you won't have many supply items early on, unlocking this allows you to start accumulating them and benefiting from their passive bonuses.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid in Chapter 1

Even in the first chapter, there are mistakes that can quickly end your expedition:

  • Over-spawning Enemies: Placing too many Cemeteries or Spider Cocoons too early can overwhelm your hero, especially if you haven't found good gear. Balance enemy spawns with your current strength.
  • Ignoring Healing: Don't neglect Meadows and Villages. Running out of HP far from a healing source is a common cause of death.
  • Hoarding Tiles: Don't be afraid to place tiles. The more tiles you place, the more resources you generate and the faster you progress. Just be mindful of their effects.
  • Underestimating the Lich: The Lich is the first boss and can be challenging if you haven't prepared. Ensure you have decent gear and a few Potions of Healing before you trigger his appearance.

By following these guidelines, you'll be well-equipped to navigate the challenges of Chapter 1, gather essential resources, and prepare for the greater threats that lie beyond the first loop. Good luck, hero!
