Character Abilities
Luigi, with the invaluable assistance of Professor E. Gadd's inventions, possesses a versatile toolkit for navigating the haunted halls of the Last Resort hotel. Mastering these abilities is crucial for capturing ghosts, solving puzzles, and uncovering hidden riches. This section details each of Luigi's core actions and provides strategic tips for their optimal use.
The Poltergust G-00
Luigi's primary weapon and utility device, the Poltergust G-00, is a marvel of ghost-hunting technology. It combines several functions essential for progression.
Suction Shot
- Activation: Press the Y button.
- Function: Fires a plunger with a rope attached. This is indispensable for interacting with various environmental elements.
- Strategic Uses:
- Breaking Objects: Attach the Suction Shot to breakable objects like wooden boards, cracked walls, or even some furniture. Once attached, pull back on the left stick to yank the object, often revealing hidden passages, coins, or even ghosts.
- Opening Containers: Many chests, safes, and even some doors require a Suction Shot to open. Look for a small, circular target on the object.
- Ghost Combat: Certain shielded ghosts or those holding items can be disarmed or stunned by a well-placed Suction Shot. For example, the Hammer ghost's shield can be pulled off, exposing it to the Strobe Light.
- Puzzle Solving: Throughout the hotel, you'll encounter mechanisms that need to be pulled or activated with the Suction Shot. Pay attention to glowing targets or objects that seem out of place.
Strobulb
- Activation: Press the A button.
- Function: Emits a powerful flash of light capable of stunning ghosts and activating certain devices.
- Strategic Uses:
- Ghost Stun: The Strobulb is your primary method for stunning ghosts. Once a ghost is stunned, you can begin vacuuming it with the Poltergust. The timing is key; wait for the ghost to be vulnerable (e.g., after an attack, or when its heart is exposed).
- Revealing Hidden Objects: Flash the Strobulb at suspicious areas, paintings, or even empty spaces. This can reveal hidden coins, gems, or even invisible ghosts.
- Activating Mechanisms: Some switches, especially those with a circular light, require a Strobulb flash to activate. This is common for opening secret doors or powering up machinery.
- Dispelling Illusions: Certain spectral barriers or illusions can be temporarily dispelled by a well-aimed flash, allowing Luigi to pass through.
Vacuum (Suck)
- Activation: Hold the ZR button.
- Function: Inhales objects, money, and stunned ghosts into the Poltergust.
- Strategic Uses:
- Ghost Capture: After stunning a ghost with the Strobulb, immediately hold ZR to begin vacuuming. The ghost will struggle; pull back on the left stick in the opposite direction of its movement to inflict damage. Repeat this until its HP reaches zero and it's fully absorbed.
- Coin and Bill Collection: Vacuuming curtains, piles of leaves, or even just the air in certain rooms can reveal hidden coins, bills, and gold bars. Make it a habit to vacuum every nook and cranny.
- Environmental Manipulation: Use the vacuum to pull down drapes, spin fans, or clear away cobwebs. This often reveals hidden paths or items.
- Puzzle Solving: Some puzzles require you to vacuum specific objects or clear debris to reveal clues or activate mechanisms.
Blow
- Activation: Hold the ZL button.
- Function: Expels air from the Poltergust, pushing objects away.
- Strategic Uses:
- Moving Objects: Use the blow function to push light objects, such as balls, scattered papers, or even some furniture, to reveal hidden items or solve puzzles.
- Activating Windmills/Fans: Some environmental puzzles involve spinning windmills or activating fans, which can be done by blowing air at them.
- Clearing Dust/Smoke: In certain areas, you might encounter dust clouds or smoke that obscure your vision or hide secrets. A quick blast of air can clear them away.
Burst
- Activation: Press ZL + ZR simultaneously.
- Function: Creates a powerful shockwave around Luigi, pushing away nearby ghosts and objects.
- Strategic Uses:
- Crowd Control: In situations where Luigi is surrounded by multiple ghosts, a Burst can knock them all back, giving you precious breathing room to re-strategize or stun them individually.
- Dodging Attacks: A well-timed Burst can interrupt some ghost attacks or provide a brief moment of invulnerability, allowing Luigi to avoid damage.
- Revealing Hidden Items: The force of the Burst can sometimes shake loose coins or items from ceilings, chandeliers, or even certain pieces of furniture. It's a great way to quickly check a room for secrets.
- Jumping: While not a traditional jump, the Burst provides a small vertical lift, allowing Luigi to reach slightly elevated ledges or activate ceiling-mounted switches.
Gooigi
Introduced early in your adventure, Gooigi is Luigi's slimy, indestructible doppelganger, controlled by pressing the right stick. Gooigi is essential for navigating hazardous environments and solving complex puzzles.
- Summoning/Dismissing: Press the right stick to summon or dismiss Gooigi.
- Unique Properties:
- Indestructible (mostly): Gooigi can pass through spikes, grates, and even some ghost attacks without taking damage. However, he is vulnerable to water and fire, which will cause him to melt instantly.
- Pass Through Grates: Gooigi's most crucial ability is his capacity to squeeze through narrow grates and pipes, accessing areas Luigi cannot. Look for green-glowing grates.
- Two-Player Puzzles: Many puzzles require both Luigi and Gooigi to operate simultaneously. This often involves one character holding a switch while the other progresses, or both characters interacting with separate mechanisms.
- Independent Movement: When controlling Gooigi, Luigi remains stationary. You can switch between them at any time by pressing the right stick again.
- Shared Inventory: Gooigi has access to all of Luigi's Poltergust functions (Suction Shot, Strobulb, Vacuum, Blow, Burst), making him a fully capable ghost hunter and puzzle solver.
- Strategic Uses:
- Reaching Inaccessible Areas: Whenever you see a grate, a narrow pipe, or a spiked floor, think Gooigi. He can often retrieve keys, gems, or activate switches on the other side.
- Distracting Ghosts: Gooigi can act as a decoy for stronger ghosts, allowing Luigi to get into a better position for an attack.
- Operating Dual Mechanisms: Many boss battles and environmental puzzles are designed around the simultaneous actions of Luigi and Gooigi. For example, one might hold open a door while the other vacuums a ghost.
- Collecting Out-of-Reach Items: If a gem or coin is just out of Luigi's reach, Gooigi might be able to stretch or squeeze to grab it.
