Enemy & Ghost Bestiary
Welcome to the comprehensive guide to the spectral residents and other hazards you'll encounter throughout the Last Resort hotel! Mastering these encounters is key to rescuing your friends and vacuuming up every last drop of treasure. This bestiary provides detailed strategies for each foe, ensuring Luigi (and Gooigi!) are always prepared.
Basic Ghost Types
These are the most common apparitions you'll face. While individually not too threatening, they can overwhelm you in groups if you're not careful.
Greenie
- Description: The most common ghost, identifiable by its green hue. They often carry simple objects or just float menacingly.
- Strategy:
- Stun: Flash them with your Strobulb (A button).
- Vacuum: Once stunned, use your Poltergust G-00 to vacuum them up (ZR button).
- Slam: While vacuuming, repeatedly press the A button to slam them around, dealing extra damage and potentially hitting other ghosts.
- Capture: Continue vacuuming until their HP reaches zero and they are sucked into the Poltergust.
- Tips: Greenies are often found guarding keys or small amounts of money. In multi-ghost encounters, prioritize stunning as many as possible before beginning to vacuum.
Slinker
- Description: These sneaky ghosts are purple and prefer to hide, often ambushing Luigi from behind objects or out of sight.
- Strategy:
- Detection: Listen for their distinct giggling or the subtle shimmer of their presence. They often appear after you interact with an object or enter a new room.
- Stun & Vacuum: The same basic stun and vacuum technique applies. Be quick, as they tend to vanish and reappear if not dealt with swiftly.
- Tips: Always be aware of your surroundings, especially after clearing a room of obvious threats. Slinkers love to pop up when you least expect it.
Hammer
- Description: Large, blue, and aggressive, Hammers are easily identified by their imposing size and tendency to charge or slam the ground.
- Strategy:
- Dodge: Their attacks are powerful. Dodge their ground slams or charges by moving out of the way.
- Stun & Vacuum: After a failed attack, they are often briefly vulnerable. Use this window to flash them with your Strobulb.
- Slam: Due to their higher HP, you'll likely need to slam them multiple times.
- Tips: Hammers can be a pain in tight spaces. Try to lure them into more open areas if possible. Their ground slams can also reveal hidden items or break weak objects.
Advanced Ghost Types & Special Encounters
As you progress through the hotel, you'll encounter ghosts with unique abilities or requiring specific tactics.
Goobers
- Description: These yellow, often mischievous ghosts are known for throwing objects or using shields.
- Strategy:
- Shielded Goobers: If a Goober is holding a shield or an object, you cannot directly stun them.
- Option 1 (Slam): Vacuum another ghost (like a Greenie) and slam it into the shielded Goober to break their defense.
- Option 2 (Burst): Use your Burst (ZL + ZR) near them to make them drop their guard or their item.
- Option 3 (Gooigi): Have Gooigi sneak behind them and flash them from the rear.
- Stun & Vacuum: Once their defense is down, proceed with the standard stun and vacuum technique.
- Tips: Goobers often appear in groups with other ghost types. Prioritize removing their defenses to make the fight manageable.
Trappers
- Description: These red, spider-like ghosts will try to ensnare Luigi or Gooigi with their long tongues.
- Strategy:
- Avoid Tongue: Keep your distance or move quickly to avoid being caught by their tongue.
- Stun & Vacuum: If you are caught, rapidly wiggle the left stick to escape. Once they extend their tongue and miss, or if they are otherwise vulnerable, flash them with your Strobulb.
- Slam: They have moderate HP, so a few slams will be necessary.
- Tips: Trappers can be particularly annoying in rooms with multiple enemies. Consider using your Dark-Light Device (Y button) if they try to hide in the environment.
Polterkitty
- Description: A mischievous, feline ghost that appears on various floors, including the 8th Floor: Paranormal Productions. It's not a direct combatant but a puzzle ghost.
- Strategy:
- Chase & Corner: Polterkitty will flee when approached. You need to chase it through various rooms. For example, on the 8th Floor, it might flee from the Studio Entrance to the Main Hallway, then into the Central Production Area, and finally into a specific set, like the Horror Set.
- Reveal & Stun: When it corners itself, it will usually transform into a more aggressive, visible form. This is your chance to flash it with the Strobulb.
- Vacuum & Capture: Once stunned, vacuum it up like a regular ghost. It will usually take a few captures across different locations to fully defeat it.
- Specific 8th Floor Encounter (Paranormal Productions):
- After obtaining the Director's Key from the Director's Office, Polterkitty will appear.
- Initial Encounter: Find it in the Studio Entrance. Approach, and it will flee.
- Second Location: Follow it to the Main Hallway. It will hide behind a large object or in a corner. Reveal it with your Dark-Light Device if necessary, then approach.
- Third Location: It will then retreat to the Central Production Area. It might hide in one of the large ventilation shafts or behind a prop.
- Final Capture: It will then enter one of the themed sets, such as the Horror Set. Here, it will become aggressive. Stun it with your Strobulb and vacuum it until it flees again. Repeat this process until it is fully captured.
- Rewards: Capturing Polterkitty often yields a large amount of cash and sometimes a key to progress.
Environmental Hazards
Not all threats are ghosts. The hotel itself can be dangerous!
Spiked Balls/Traps
- Description: These are often found in areas like Floor 6: Castle MacFrights. They are large, rolling hazards that deal damage on contact.
- Strategy:
- Observe Patterns: Most spiked balls move in predictable patterns. Wait for an opening.
- Use Gooigi: If a path is too dangerous for Luigi, send Gooigi through. He can reform if destroyed, making him ideal for navigating these traps.
- Manipulate: Sometimes you can use your Poltergust to push or pull these hazards to create a path or activate a switch.
- Tips: Don't rush. Patience is key when dealing with environmental traps.
Falling Objects
- Description: Objects like chandeliers, crates, or even parts of the ceiling can fall, often triggered by ghost activity or specific interactions.
- Strategy:
- Listen & Look: Pay attention to audio cues and shadows on the ground.
- Dodge: Move quickly out of the way when an object begins to fall.
- Tips: Sometimes, falling objects can be used to your advantage, such as breaking open crates or damaging ghosts.
