Saving & Loading

Unlike traditional RPGs with manual save points, Luigi's Mansion 3 employs a robust auto-save system to ensure your progress is consistently recorded. This means you rarely need to worry about losing significant progress, even if you need to step away from the game suddenly. However, understanding how and when the game saves can be crucial for strategic play and efficient ghost hunting.

Understanding Auto-Save Triggers

The game automatically saves your progress at key moments. While you won't see a "Saving..." prompt every time, rest assured that the following actions reliably trigger an auto-save:

  • Entering and Exiting Floors: Each time you use the elevator to travel between the various floors of The Last Resort, the game performs an auto-save. This is particularly useful after clearing a challenging floor or defeating a boss.
  • Collecting Key Items: Obtaining important story-progression items, such as the elevator buttons needed to access new floors, will trigger a save.
  • Defeating Boss Ghosts: After successfully capturing a floor's boss ghost and retrieving its corresponding elevator button, the game will automatically save your progress.
  • Returning to E. Gadd's Lab: Whenever you use the Poltergust G-00's warp function to return to Professor E. Gadd's mobile laboratory on the Basement (B1) floor, a save is initiated. This is an excellent way to secure your progress before taking a break or if you've collected a significant amount of cash.
  • Purchasing Items from E. Gadd's Shop: Any transaction made at E. Gadd's shop, whether it's buying a Boo Tracker or a Gem Finder, will also trigger an auto-save.

Strategic Saving Tips

While auto-save is convenient, you can leverage its triggers to your advantage:

  • Before Challenging Encounters: If you're about to enter a room that you anticipate will contain a tough ghost encounter or a complex puzzle, consider warping back to E. Gadd's Lab first. This ensures that if you struggle, you won't lose progress on any valuable collectibles or cash you've gathered since your last auto-save.
  • After Significant Collectible Hauls: Have you just spent a considerable amount of time meticulously vacuuming every nook and cranny of the RIP Suites (Floor 5) or the Castle MacFrights (Floor 6) and amassed a large sum of cash? A quick trip to E. Gadd's Lab will lock in that monetary gain.
  • Exiting the Game: When you're ready to stop playing, the safest way to ensure all your progress is saved is to either return to E. Gadd's Lab or travel between two floors using the elevator before closing the game. This guarantees a recent auto-save has occurred.

Loading Your Game

To continue your adventure in The Last Resort:

  1. From the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu, select the Luigi's Mansion 3 game icon.
  2. Choose "Play" to launch the game.
  3. On the title screen, select "Continue" to load your most recent auto-save file.

The game will automatically load you back to the last significant location where an auto-save occurred, typically the last room you entered or E. Gadd's Lab if you warped there. There are no manual save slots to choose from; the game manages a single, continuously updated save file.
