Progression & Unlockables
Welcome, aspiring ghost hunter! This section will guide you through the essential progression mechanics of Luigi's Mansion 3, ensuring you don't miss a single spooky secret or valuable upgrade. Understanding how to advance and what rewards await you is key to rescuing Mario and his friends from the clutches of King Boo!
Story Progression: Floor by Floor
Your primary objective is to ascend the Last Resort hotel, floor by floor, defeating unique boss ghosts and recovering elevator buttons. Each floor presents new challenges, puzzles, and hidden collectibles.
- The Grand Lobby (1F): Your adventure begins here. After the initial cutscene and tutorial, your goal is to retrieve the first elevator button from the bellhop ghost, Steward. This unlocks access to the hotel's lower floors.
- Mezzanine (2F): This floor introduces more complex puzzles and the first set of collectible gems. Focus on using your Poltergust G-00's Suction Shot to manipulate objects and reveal hidden passages. The boss here, the Steward, guards the button for 3F.
- Basement (B1): While not a primary story floor for an elevator button, the Basement is crucial for unlocking the Garage and eventually the Boilerworks. You'll encounter your first Gooigi puzzle here, requiring you to navigate grates and activate mechanisms simultaneously.
- Castle MacFrights (6F): A significant early-game milestone. This medieval-themed floor requires careful navigation through traps and a boss battle against a knight ghost. Defeating him grants you the button for 7F.
- Garden Suites (7F): This lush, plant-filled floor introduces environmental puzzles involving water and plant growth. The boss here is a gardener ghost who requires specific tactics to defeat.
- Paranormal Productions (8F): Get ready for some movie magic! This floor involves navigating various film sets and using your Dark-Light Device to reveal hidden objects and paths. The director ghost boss is a fun challenge.
Key Unlockables & How to Obtain Them
Beyond story progression, several crucial tools and features will unlock as you play, significantly enhancing your ghost-hunting capabilities.
Poltergust G-00 Upgrades
While the Poltergust itself doesn't have traditional "upgrades" in the sense of stat boosts, new abilities are unlocked through story progression:
- Slam: Unlocked very early on. After stunning a ghost with your Strobulb, vacuum them up and then repeatedly press the A button to slam them around. This is your primary damage dealer.
- Burst: Unlocked after retrieving the Poltergust G-00 from Professor E. Gadd. Pressing X will create a burst of air, useful for revealing hidden objects, stunning multiple ghosts, or jumping.
- Suction Shot: Also unlocked with the Poltergust G-00. Aim with Y and fire a plunger with ZR. This allows you to pull off shields, open doors, and manipulate heavy objects.
- Dark-Light Device: Unlocked alongside the Poltergust G-00. Use it with Y to reveal hidden objects, furniture, and even invisible ghosts. Remember to vacuum up the ghostly essence after revealing an object to make it solid.
- Gooigi: Professor E. Gadd introduces Gooigi after you rescue him from the Basement (B1). Gooigi is an invaluable clone of Luigi that can pass through grates, spikes, and other hazards that Luigi cannot. You'll switch between them using the right analog stick.
E. Gadd's Lab Functions
E. Gadd's Lab, accessible from the elevator, becomes your hub for various useful features:
- Gallery: Unlocked after rescuing Professor E. Gadd. Here you can view your collected ghosts, gems, and Boos. Each ghost has a detailed entry, and you can track your progress on collectibles.
- Shop: The shop becomes available after you collect a certain amount of money (usually after clearing a few floors). Here you can purchase:
- Gold Bones: These act as extra lives. If Luigi's health reaches zero, a Gold Bone will revive him on the spot. Highly recommended for challenging boss fights!
- Boo Tracker: A device that helps you locate Boos on floors you've already visited. Essential for 100% completion.
- Gem Finder: Similar to the Boo Tracker, this helps pinpoint the location of any remaining gems on a floor.
- Communication Device (Virtual Boo): This device, given to you by E. Gadd, allows you to communicate with him and access the map. It's available from the start.
Collectibles & Completion
Beyond the main story, Luigi's Mansion 3 offers a wealth of collectibles that reward exploration and puzzle-solving.
Gems
Each of the 17 floors (including the Basement and Rooftop) contains 6 unique gems, totaling 102 gems in the game. These are often hidden behind environmental puzzles, secret passages, or require specific Poltergust abilities to uncover. Collecting all 6 gems on a floor will reward you with a special achievement and contribute to your overall completion percentage. Use the Gem Finder from E. Gadd's shop if you're struggling to locate the last few on a floor.
Boos
After defeating the boss of the Boilerworks (B2), Boos will begin to appear randomly on floors you've already visited. There is one Boo per floor. To find a Boo, you'll need to use your Dark-Light Device in various rooms. When a Boo is nearby, your Poltergust will rumble, and the controller will vibrate. Follow the vibrations to pinpoint its location, then use the Dark-Light to reveal it. Once revealed, suck it up with your Poltergust, and prepare for a quick-time event where you'll need to slam it to defeat it. Collecting all Boos is a significant challenge and unlocks a special reward.
Money
Money (coins, bills, and gold bars) is scattered everywhere in the Last Resort. Vacuum every nook and cranny, open every drawer, and destroy every breakable object. While not strictly an unlockable, money is essential for purchasing Gold Bones and the Boo/Gem Trackers from E. Gadd's shop, making your journey much smoother.
