Advanced Chain Strategies

While basic chains are essential, truly high scores come from understanding and executing advanced chain strategies. This involves setting up multiple layers of clears and anticipating the Timeline's movement to maximize your score multiplier.

Key Advanced Techniques:

1. Vertical Chains: Instead of just horizontal chains, look for opportunities to create vertical stacks of same-colored blocks that can be cleared by a single Timeline pass. For example, a 2x4 block of the same color will clear as two 2x2 squares, contributing to a chain.
2. Staggered Clears: Place blocks so that the Timeline clears one 2x2 square, and as it moves, the blocks above or next to it fall into place to form another 2x2 square, which is then also cleared by the same Timeline pass. This requires precise timing and foresight.
3. 'Well' Building: Create a deep, narrow column (a 'well') of one color, then fill it with blocks of the same color to create a massive vertical chain when the Timeline sweeps through. This is risky but highly rewarding.
4. Power-Up Block Integration: Strategically use Single-Color Blocks to connect and clear large, disparate groups of same-colored blocks, turning what would be small clears into a huge chain.
5. Anticipate the Next Block: Always be thinking two or three blocks ahead. How will the current block affect the placement of the next, and how can that lead to a chain?

Practice these techniques in Challenge Mode, especially on slower skins, before attempting them in faster, more demanding environments. The ability to consistently build large chains is the hallmark of a Lumines expert.
