Stopping the Run
The 49ers' zone run scheme is incredibly effective. You need to commit to stopping the run first. This means using run-heavy defensive formations and plays.
- Recommended Formations: 3-4, 4-3, Goal Line (in short-yardage).
- Play Calls: Run Stuff plays (e.g., Cover 2 Man Under, Cover 3 Sky with run fits). Use 'Crash Middle' or 'Crash Outside' defensive line adjustments (D-Pad Left + Right Stick) to counter their run direction.
- User Control: User a middle linebacker or safety to fill gaps and make tackles. Don't over-pursue; maintain your run fit.
Containing YAC Threats
Even if you stop the run, the 49ers have multiple players (McCaffrey, Samuel, Kittle) who excel at gaining yards after the catch. You need to tackle immediately and prevent them from breaking free.
- Recommended Coverage: Zone coverage (Cover 3, Cover 4) can help contain YAC by having defenders in the area. Man coverage can work if your defenders have high tackling and pursuit.
- Tackling: Prioritize conservative tackles (X/A) over hit sticks to ensure the tackle is made. Swarm to the ball with multiple defenders.
Key Tip: Force the 49ers into obvious passing situations (3rd & long). This allows you to bring pressure and play more aggressive pass defense. Don't let them dictate the tempo with their run game.
