It is important to note that the technique commonly referred to as "Fire Hopping" or "Demon Sliding" was a prominent and highly debated mechanic in the original Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U, but it has been either entirely removed or sificantly nerfed in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch. In its original form, Fire Hopping was a technique that allowed players to extend the duration of a mini-turbo boost. After initiating a drift and performing a mini-turbo, players would rapidly tap the drift button while simultaneously hopping left and right. This rapid input would, in effect, prolong the mini-turbo's speed boost, allowing players to maintain higher speeds for longer periods, especially on straights. This was a crucial, albeit difficult to master, technique for competitive play on the Wii U version, enabling skilled players to gain substantial advantages.
In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, this specific input sequence no longer yields the same extended boost effect. While drifting and mini-turbos are still fundamental to achieving high speeds, the ability to "chain" mini-turbos indefinitely through Fire Hopping has been removed. This change sificantly altered the meta-game for competitive play, shifting the focus towards other techniques and item management. The removal of Fire Hopping means that You can no longer rely on this exploit to maintain constant high speeds through skillful button mashing. Instead, players must now focus on perfecting their drifting, maximizing the duration of standard mini-turbos, and utilizing other speed-boosting mechanics like slipstreaming and item usage more effectively. While the term "Demon Sliding" might still be used colloquially by some players, it no longer refers to the exploit that was present in the Wii U version. The game now emphasizes a more balanced approach to speed management, where skillful driving and strategic item use are paramount, rather than a single, highly technical exploit. This makes the game more accessible to a wider range of players while still rewarding mastery of core mechanics.
