Coins are a crucial collectible in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, serving two main purposes:

  • Speed Boost: Collecting coins increases your kart's top speed, up to a maximum of 10 coins. Losing coins (by being hit or falling off the track) reduces your speed. Always aim to have 10 coins.
  • Unlocks: Coins are the currency for unlocking new kart bodies, tires, and gliders. You unlock a new part every 50 coins collected, up to 4500 coins. After that, parts unlock every 100 coins until all are acquired.
