While active, the Piranha Plant will periodically lunge forward and chomp at anything in its immediate vicinity, including opponents, incoming items, and even loose coins. Each successful chomp provides a small, but noticeable, speed boost to your kart, encouraging aggressive driving. The optimal use of the Piranha Plant leans heavily into aggressive play. By driving closely to opponents, you increase the chances of the Piranha Plant landing a chomp, thereby gaining those incremental speed boosts and potentially disrupting their race. It's also an effective tool for coin collection, as the Piranha Plant can automatically snatch coins that are directly in front of your kart, helping you reach the maximum of 10 coins for top speed. Defensively, the orbiting Piranha Plant can also act as a deterrent, as it can chomp incoming projectiles like Green Shells or Bananas before they reach your kart, offering a limited form of protection. However, it's important to remember that the Piranha Plant's range is quite limited, and it doesn't offer protection against homing items like Red Shells or the Spiny Shell. Its duration is also finite, so maximizing its offensive and defensive capabilities within its active period is key to leveraging its benefits effectively.
