The Super Horn is one of the most coveted defensive and offensive items in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, offering a unique ability to destroy incoming threats and disrupt nearby opponents. Upon activation, the Super Horn emits a powerful shockwave that radiates outwards from your kart. This shockwave has a dual purpose: it obliterates any incoming item projectiles within its radius, and it simultaneously spins out any opponents who are too close to your kart. This makes it an invaluable tool for survival and for gaining an advantage in close-quarters combat.
The primary and most critical optimal use of the Super Horn is for defending against the dreaded Spiny Shell. The Spiny Shell is notorious for targeting You in first place, and the Super Horn is the *only* item in the game capable of destroying it before it hits its intended target. Timing is absolutely paramount here; you must activate the Super Horn precisely as the Spiny Shell is descending towards the leading racer. This requires anticipation and a keen understanding of the Spiny Shell's attack pattern. Beyond its Spiny Shell defense, the Super Horn is an excellent close-range attack. If opponents are tailgating you or attempting to overtake you on a narrow part of the track, activating the Super Horn will spin them out, allowing you to maintain or regain your position. It's particularly effective on tracks with tight turns or crowded sections, such as the final lap of Rainbow Road. While it doesn't affect opponents at a distance, its immediate area-of-effect makes it a potent tool for controlling your immediate surroundings. It's also important to note that the Super Horn does not protect you from items like Lightning or Blue Shells if they are used when you are not directly in their path of effect, but it will destroy any other projectile items like Red Shells or Bananas that come into contact with its shockwave.
