Unlocking new kart parts in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a core part of the progression, allowing you to customize your ride for both aesthetics and performance. While many parts are unlocked simply by collecting coins, there are special challenges for the coveted Gold Parts.
Standard Part Unlocks (Coin-Based)
The vast majority of kart bodies, tires, and gliders are unlocked by accumulating coins during races. Here's how the system works:
- Coin Collection: Every coin you pick up on the track counts towards your total. This includes coins collected in Grand Prix, VS Race, and even Battle Mode.
- Multiplayer Bonus: When playing in multiplayer, the total number of coins collected by all players in a race is added to each player's individual coin count for unlock purposes. This can significantly speed up the process.
- Unlock Thresholds: New parts become available at regular coin intervals. Initially, you'll unlock a new part every 30 coins. This threshold gradually increases as you unlock more parts, eventually reaching 50 coins per unlock. Keep racing and collecting those shiny coins!
- Total Coins Needed: To unlock all standard kart parts, you'll need to collect a grand total of 5,000 coins.
Gold Parts: The Ultimate Challenge
The Gold Parts are special, high-performance components that require specific achievements beyond simple coin collection. These are a true mark of a seasoned racer.
Gold Standard Kart
This sleek, golden kart body signifies mastery of the Grand Prix circuits.
- How to Unlock: Achieve at least a 1-star rating (54 points or more) on every single Grand Prix cup in both 150cc and Mirror Mode. This means consistently placing high in all four races within each cup.
- Strategy: Focus on maintaining first place as much as possible. A 1-star rating typically requires two 1st place finishes and two 2nd place finishes, or three 1st place finishes and one 3rd/4th place finish. Aim for 60 points (four 1st place finishes) for a 3-star rating to ensure you comfortably meet the 1-star requirement. Practice each track to learn shortcuts and item management.
Gold Tires
These premium tires offer excellent handling and traction.
- How to Unlock (Option 1 - Time Trials): Beat all of the Staff Ghosts in every Time Trial course. This is a challenging feat that requires precise driving and optimal kart setups for each track.
- How to Unlock (Option 2 - Coins): Alternatively, if Time Trials aren't your strong suit, you can unlock the Gold Tires by accumulating a massive 15,000 coins. This is a significant grind but offers a different path to acquisition.
- Strategy (Time Trials): Watch the Staff Ghost replays to learn their lines and boost timings. Experiment with different kart/character combinations to find what works best for each track. Don't be afraid to restart if you make a major mistake early on.
- Strategy (Coins): Play Grand Prix or VS Race modes frequently. Focus on courses with many coin blocks or long stretches where coins are easily collected. Multiplayer sessions can significantly boost your coin count.

- How to Unlock: Collect a total of 10,000 coins.
- Strategy: Similar to the coin strategy for standard parts and Gold Tires, simply keep playing and collecting coins in any game mode. Grand Prix and VS Race are generally the most efficient ways to rack up coins. Remember the multiplayer bonus for faster accumulation!
