Mastering boosts and mini-turbos is fundamental to achieving fast lap times and maintaining a competitive edge in Mario Kart DS. These techniques provide crucial bursts of speed that can make all the difference.

Start Boost:
- Timing: As the countdown begins, hold down the 'A' button just as the '2' disappears from the screen.
- Perfect Boost: If timed correctly, you'll get a powerful boost off the starting line. If you hold 'A' too early, you'll stall; too late, and you'll get a weaker boost or none at all.
Mini-Turbos (Drifting):
- Initiate Drift: As you approach a turn, hold 'L' and turn sharply in the direction of the corner.
- First Spark (Orange): Continue holding 'L' and the direction. After a short duration, orange sparks will appear under your kart. Release 'L' now for a basic mini-turbo.
- Second Spark (Blue): For a more powerful mini-turbo, continue holding 'L' and the direction even longer. The orange sparks will turn blue. Release 'L' when you see blue sparks for a super mini-turbo.
- Chaining Mini-Turbos: On long, sweeping turns or even slight curves, you can often chain multiple mini-turbos by quickly initiating a new drift in the opposite direction immediately after releasing the previous one (this is the basis of 'snaking').
Other Boosts:
- Boost Panels: Drive over these colored arrows on the track for an instant speed boost. Always aim to hit them.
- Ramps/Jumps: Hitting certain ramps with enough speed can give you a small boost upon landing.
- Mushrooms/Stars: These items provide significant speed boosts and invincibility, respectively.
Practice your start boosts in Time Trials. For mini-turbos, focus on getting consistent blue sparks on every turn. The more boosts you hit, the faster you'll be.
