Mission Mode Walkthrough
Mission Mode in Mario Kart DS presents a unique set of challenges that test your driving skills and item usage in ways the Grand Prix doesn't. Success in these missions is key to unlocking new characters, karts, and even the formidable Bowser Jr. in his Clown Kart.
Each mission is assed a difficulty level and a star rating (1-3 stars) based on your performance. Achieving 1 star is usually sufficient to progress, but aiming for 3 stars will grant you the most rewards and bragging rights. The missions range from simple races against specific opponents to collecting coins, hitting targets, or surviving timed challenges.
Mission 1-1: Toad's Challenge
Your first mission is a straightforward race against Toad on Mario Circuit. The goal is to finish ahead of him. Focus on clean driving and mastering the basic drift to maintain speed. Don't be afraid to use any items you get to gain an advantage.
Mission 1-2: Koopa Troopa's Coin Hunt
This mission requires you to collect a set number of coins within a time limit on Luigi's Mansion. The coins are scattered throughout the track, and some are hidden. Pay attention to the mini-map for coin locations and try to take efficient paths to maximize your collection rate. A well-timed Mushroom can help you reach distant coin clusters quickly.
Mission 1-3: Shy Guy's Target Practice
On Yoshi Falls, you'll need to hit a series of targets with items. The most effective item for this is the Green Shell. Aim carefully, as the targets are often small and require precise shots. Missing too many will make it difficult to achieve the required score.
Mission 1-4: Lakitu's Survival
This mission puts you in a race against multiple opponents on Peach Gardens, but with a twist: you must survive a barrage of Bob-ombs. Prioritize dodging the explosions. If you get hit, try to recover your speed quickly. Using a Starman can make you invincible and help you navigate through the chaos.
Mission 1-5: Bowser Jr.'s Revenge
The final mission of the first set often involves a direct confrontation with a boss character, like Bowser Jr. These battles usually require you to hit the boss with specific items or to survive their unique attacks while trying to reach the finish line. Study the boss's patterns and exploit any openings.
As you progress, the missions become increasingly challenging, demanding a deeper understanding of each track's layout, item probabilities, and advanced driving techniques. Remember to experiment with different karts for each character, as their stats can sificantly impact your performance in specific mission types.
