Battle Mode offers a chaotic and fun alternative to traditional racing, focusing on direct combat with items in dedicated arenas. Mario Kart DS features two distinct battle types: Balloon Battle and Shine Runners. While primarily a multiplayer mode, you can also play against CPU opponents.

Balloon Battle:
The objective is to pop your opponents' balloons while protecting your own. You start with three balloons. Getting hit by an item causes you to lose a balloon. If you lose all balloons, you're out, or you respawn with fewer points depending on settings. Collect item boxes to get offensive and defensive items.
- Offensive Items: Red Shells, Green Shells, Bob-ombs are your primary weapons.
- Defensive Items: Bananas can be dropped behind you, and Stars grant temporary invincibility.
- Stealing Balloons: You can steal balloons from opponents by driving into them if you have a Mushroom or Star.
- Strategy: Stay mobile, anticipate opponents' movements, and use items wisely. Don't be afraid to retreat and collect more items if you're low on balloons.
Shine Runners:
The goal is to collect and hold onto the most Shine Sprites when the timer runs out. Shine Sprites appear randomly on the arena. If you get hit by an item, you drop all your collected Shine Sprites, which can then be picked up by others.
- Collecting Shines: Drive over a Shine Sprite to pick it up. You can hold multiple.
- Protecting Shines: Once you have Shines, your priority shifts to defense. Use Bananas and Triple Bananas to protect your rear.
- Stealing Shines: Hit opponents with items to make them drop their Shines, then quickly collect them.
- Strategy: Balance offense and defense. Sometimes it's better to hide with your Shines, other times to aggressively pursue opponents who have many.
Battle Mode is a great way to unwind and practice your item-throwing skills in a less structured environment. It's especially fun with friends via local wireless.
