The Mushroom Cup is one of the initial cups available in Mario Kart World, offering a traditional racing experience within the game's new open-world format. Clearing this cup is essential for unlocking Donkey Kong, one of the playable characters. The game features 24 racers in Grand Prix modes, making for chaotic and engaging races.

In Mario Kart World, Grand Prix races now involve traveling directly from course to course, with only one lap per race. You select your engine class after choosing the cup. Your performance on higher difficulties can automatically grant you equivalent scores on lower difficulties. For example, a 3-star gold trophy on 150cc Mushroom Cup will also award a 3-star gold trophy for 50cc and 100cc Mushroom Cup.

New visual elements include rainbow-colored sparks for the Ultra Mini-Turbo. The colors of Wario, Waluigi, and Donkey Kong's Pipe Frame Karts have been updated to match their iconic colors: yellow, purple, and brown, respectively. Lightning item effects now cause victims to suffer a spasm and only hit rivals in front of the user.
