Character Respec & Retraining
Mass Effect 3 offers players the flexibility to reallocate Shepard's skill points, allowing for experimentation with different builds and playstyles. This 'respec' feature is invaluable for adapting to new challenges, optimizing your character for specific missions, or simply trying out new abilities.
You can respec your character's abilities in two primary ways:
- On the Normandy: After a certain point in the main story, a character will become available on the Normandy who can reallocate your skill points. This service typically costs a small amount of Credits. This is the most convenient and frequently used method for retraining your character.
- New Game Plus (NG+): When starting a New Game Plus playthrough, your character retains all their previously earned skill points. This allows you to immediately reallocate them from the start of the game, enabling you to experiment with entirely different class builds from the outset.
The ability to respec is particularly useful because the effectiveness of certain powers can change depending on the mission, your squadmates, or the enemy types you are facing. For example, if you find yourself struggling against heavily armored opponents, you might reallocate points to unlock or enhance powers that deal bonus damage to armor, such as Incinerate or Warp.
Experimentation is encouraged. Don't be afraid to try different combinations of powers and passive abilities. Whether you want to focus on devastating biotic explosions, tactical tech abilities, or raw combat prowess, the respec option ensures you can tailor Shepard to your preferred playstyle. This flexibility is a key aspect of Mass Effect 3's character customization system.
