Your squadmates are more than just combat allies in Mass Effect 3; they are companions whose loyalty, skills, and personal stories are integral to the narrative. Recruiting and maintaining their availability throughout the game is crucial for success in combat and for unlocking key story elements and character development.

In Mass Effect 3, most of your core squadmates from Mass Effect 2 will return, provided they survived the events of the previous game. Their recruitment is often tied to specific story progression or side missions. For example, if Grunt survived Mass Effect 2, he can be found and recruited during the 'Attican Traverse: Krogan Team' mission. Similarly, Jack, if alive, will appear during the 'Grissom Academy: Emergency Evacuation' mission.

New squadmates can also be recruited. For instance, James Vega joins Shepard early in the game as part of the main story. Javik, an ancient Prothean, is available as part of the 'From Ashes' DLC. Each squadmate brings unique abilities, combat styles, and dialogue to the Normandy. Their presence can significantly impact the outcome of missions, especially during combat encounters where their powers can complement Shepard's.

Squadmate availability can be affected by your choices. Failing to complete loyalty missions or making decisions that alienate a squadmate might lead to their departure or even death. For instance, if you fail to resolve the conflict between the Geth and the Quarians, one faction might become hostile, impacting the availability of squadmates aled with either side.

It's important to manage your squad effectively. Each mission allows you to select two squadmates to accompany Shepard. Consider their strengths and weaknesses, as well as their combat effectiveness against specific enemy types. Dialogue options with your squadmates on the Normandy are also vital for building relationships, uncovering their backstories, and potentially influencing their loyalty. Some squadmates may also have unique interactions or romance options available.
