Cover is paramount. Always utilize the environment for protection. Peek out to fire, then duck back into cover to reload or allow your shields to regenerate. Enemies will attempt to flank you, so be aware of your surroundings and be ready to reposition. If an enemy is using cover effectively, consider using powers like Incinerate to flush them out or biotic powers to pull them into the open.
Squadmate abilities are your most powerful asset. Ass specific targets to your squadmates and coordinate their powers with yours. For instance, if you prime an enemy with a biotic power, have a squadmate detonate it for a powerful combo.
