While Commander Shepard's appearance is fully customizable, Mass Effect 3 also allows for some degree of cosmetic customization for your squadmates. This feature lets you alter their armor colors and, in some cases, equip different armor pieces, adding a personal touch to your team.

Accessing Squadmate Appearance Options

Squadmate appearance customization is done through the Armory on the Normandy SR-2. Once you have recruited a squadmate and they are present on the ship, you can interact with the Armory terminal to access their customization options.

Customization Options for Squadmates

  • Armor Color Schemes: The most common customization is changing the color palette of your squadmates' armor. This allows you to ass distinct color schemes to each companion, making them easily identifiable.
  • Armor Pieces: In some instances, you can equip different armor pieces for your squadmates. These might be found as loot during missions or purchased from vendors. These pieces often provide minor stat bonuses in addition to changing their appearance.
  • Helmets: Certain armor sets may include or allow for the equipping of different helmet styles.

Limitations and Considerations

squadmate customization is more limited than Shepard's. You cannot change their hairstyles or facial features. The available armor pieces are also specific to each character and their class. Furthermore, some characters may have unique armor that cannot be changed.

Strategic and Aesthetic Benefits

Customizing your squadmates' appearance can serve both aesthetic and minor strategic purposes. Assing distinct colors can help you quickly identify squadmates in the heat of battle. More importantly, equipping different armor pieces might offer slight stat improvements, such as increased shields or weapon damage, depending on the piece.
