Exploration & Galaxy Management
Effective exploration and galaxy management are crucial for success in Mass Effect 3. Beyond the main story, the galaxy is vast and filled with opportunities for discovery. Utilizing the galaxy map, scanning planets, and managing your resources will not only yield valuable war assets but also prepare you for the ultimate battle against the Reapers.
The galaxy map is your primary tool for navigating between star systems and planets. As you progress through the story, new systems and planets will become available for exploration. Each system may contain multiple planets, some of which will have points of interest, resources, or side missions. Scanning planets is a key mechanic; by launching probes, you can gather resources and sometimes uncover hidden caches or distress sals.
Resources gathered from planetary scans are vital for increasing your Galactic Readiness. These resources, such as Fuel, Tech, and Rare Elements, are used to upgrade your fleet and bolster your war assets. The more resources you gather, the higher your overall military strength will be, directly impacting the game's ending.
Certain systems and planets are locked until specific story missions are completed or alliances are secured. For example, after forging an alliance with the Krogan, new systems related to their territory might become accessible. Likewise, completing missions for the Quarians might unlock new areas within their cluster.
The Normandy SR-2 serves as your mobile base, and its various departments play a role in galaxy management. The CIC (Combat Information Center) houses the galaxy map. The Med Bay allows you to interact with squadmates and manage your inventory. The War Room provides an overview of your current Galactic Readiness and available war assets.
Key Exploration Mechanics:
- Galaxy Map Navigation: Select systems and planets to travel to.
- Planetary Scanning: Launch probes to gather resources and uncover points of interest.
- Resource Management: Collect Fuel, Tech, and Rare Elements to upgrade your fleet.
- Points of Interest: Investigate anomalies, distress sals, and derelict ships for rewards.
- Vendor Interaction: Purchase supplies, upgrades, and intel from various merchants across the Citadel and other locations.
Don't overlook smaller assments or anomalies you discover during exploration. These often lead to valuable war assets, unique gear, or crucial lore that enriches the Mass Effect universe. A thorough approach to exploration ensures you are as prepared as possible for the final conflict.
