Combat Fundamentals
Understanding the core mechanics of combat in Mass Effect Legendary Edition is crucial for survival, especially on higher difficulties. While the game offers various classes and playstyles, some fundamental principles apply to all. Mastering these will sificantly improve your effectiveness in battle and reduce frustrating reloads.
- Cover System: Always prioritize cover. Press the desated cover button (usually Spacebar on PC, A on Xbox, X on PlayStation) to snap to environmental objects. This reduces incoming damage and provides opportunities to regenerate shields. Peeking out to fire and then returning to cover is a core combat loop.
- Shields, Armor, and Health: Enemies (and you) have a layered defense system. Shields are the first line of defense, followed by Armor, and finally Health. Different abilities and weapon types are more effective against specific defenses. For example, Overload strips shields quickly, while Incinerate is excellent against armor.
- Squad Commands: Don't forget your squadmates! They are invaluable assets. Use the squad command wheel (Q on PC, LB on Xbox, L1 on PlayStation) to direct their movement, target specific enemies, and deploy their unique abilities. Coordinating their powers with yours creates powerful combos.
- Weapon Wheel & Power Wheel: Familiarize yourself with both wheels. The weapon wheel allows for quick weapon swaps, while the power wheel pauses combat (on lower difficulties) to let you strategically deploy your and your squad's abilities.
- Environmental Awareness: Look for explosive barrels, weak points on large enemies, and choke points. Using the environment to your advantage can turn the tide of a difficult encounter.
