Dialogue in Mass Effect is far more than just flavor text; it's a powerful tool that shapes your journey, influences relationships, and can even alter the outcomes of missions. Every conversation is an opportunity to define Commander Shepard's personality and impact the galaxy around them.

The Dialogue Wheel Explained

The iconic Dialogue Wheel presents you with several response options, typically arranged in a specific manner:

  • Top Right (Paragon): These options generally represent heroic, compassionate, and diplomatic choices. Choosing Paragon options increases your Paragon score.
  • Bottom Right (Renegade): These options are often aggressive, pragmatic, and ruthless. Choosing Renegade options increases your Renegade score.
  • Left/Middle: These options are usually neutral, inquisitive, or provide more information without a strong moral alment. They are crucial for lore and understanding situations.

While you can mix and match, focusing on one alment (Paragon or Renegade) will unlock more powerful persuasion options later in the game.

Persuasion Checks: Charm & Intimidate

Throughout the game, you'll encounter situations where you can use your accumulated Paragon (Charm) or Renegade (Intimidate) points to sway conversations, avoid combat, gain extra rewards, or even save lives. These options appear as highlighted choices on the Dialogue Wheel (often at the top or bottom of the wheel itself).

  • Charm (Paragon): Requires a certain amount of Paragon points. Allows you to resolve conflicts peacefully, gain trust, or convince others through diplomacy.
  • Intimidate (Renegade): Requires a certain amount of Renegade points. Allows you to force outcomes, instill fear, or bypass obstacles through threats.

Prioritize investing skill points into your Charm/Intimidate abilities early on, especially if you want to consistently pass these checks. Many critical story moments and side quests have unique resolutions only accessible through successful persuasion.
