Character Creation

Welcome, Commander. Your journey through the galaxy begins here, with the creation of your very own Commander Shepard. This crucial first step sets the stage for your entire Mass Effect experience, influencing not only your appearance but also your background, combat style, and even how certain characters and situations react to you throughout all three games. The Mass Effect Legendary Edition offers a robust character creator, allowing for a high degree of personalization.

In this section, we'll walk you through each aspect of character creation, from choosing your gender and customizing your appearance to selecting your psychological profile and combat specialization. We'll provide insights into how these choices impact gameplay, offer tips for crafting a Shepard that truly feels like your own, and highlight the unique benefits and drawbacks of each class. Whether you're aiming for a ruthless renegade, a compassionate paragon, or something in between, understanding these foundational decisions is key to shaping your legend.

Take your time with this process. Your Commander Shepard is the heart of the Mass Effect saga, and every choice you make here contributes to the rich narrative that unfolds. A well-crafted Shepard will enhance your immersion and make your decisions feel even more impactful as you navigate the perilous challenges of the Milky Way.

Gender & Appearance

The first choice you'll make is your Commander Shepard's gender: Male or Female. This is a purely cosmetic and voice-acting choice, but it sificantly impacts your experience as different voice actors (Mark Meer for Male Shepard, Jennifer Hale for Female Shepard) deliver iconic lines, and some romance options are gender-locked. After selecting your gender, you'll dive into the appearance customization. The Legendary Edition features an improved character creator with more options than the original games, particularly for Mass Effect 1. You can adjust facial features like skin tone, hair style and color, eye color, scars, and even the shape of your jawline and nose. Experiment with the sliders to achieve your desired look. Remember, this appearance will carry over through all three games, though you'll have opportunities for minor adjustments at the start of Mass Effect 2 and 3.

Pre-Service History & Psychological Profile

Beyond appearance, you'll define Shepard's background through two key choices: Pre-Service History and Psychological Profile. These choices provide flavor text and can unlock unique dialogue options or minor side quests throughout the trilogy. They do not sificantly impact combat abilities.

  • Pre-Service History:
    • Spacer: Born on a starship, never truly had a home planet. Offers insights into spacefaring life.
    • Colony: Grew up on a frontier colony. Provides perspective on the challenges of expansion.
    • Earthborn: Raised on the streets of Earth. Offers a gritty, urban background.
  • Psychological Profile:
    • Sole Survivor: The only one to escape a horrific incident. Grants a bonus to Paragon points.
    • Ruthless: Known for making tough, morally ambiguous decisions. Grants a bonus to Renegade points.
    • War Hero: Celebrated for a heroic act of bravery. Grants a balanced bonus to both Paragon and Renegade.

Choose the combination that best suits the role-playing experience you envision for your Shepard. While the bonuses are minor, they can give you a slight head start on your chosen morality path.

Combat Class Selection

Your combat class is arguably the most impactful decision you'll make during character creation, as it dictates your primary combat style, available powers, and weapon proficiencies. There are six distinct classes, each offering a unique gameplay experience:

  1. Soldier: The master of weapons. Proficient with all weapon types (pistols, shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles) and excels in direct combat. Ideal for players who prefer straightforward gunplay.
  2. Engineer: A tech specialist. Focuses on disrupting enemy shields, disabling synthetics, and deploying combat drones. Relies on tactical abilities and crowd control.
  3. Adept: A biotic powerhouse. Wields powerful mass effect fields to lift, throw, and warp enemies. Excels at crowd control and biotic explosions.
  4. Infiltrator: A stealthy combatant. Combines sniper rifle proficiency with tech abilities like Tactical Cloak to bypass defenses and deliver precision strikes.
  5. Vanguard: A biotic-melee hybrid. Charges into combat with biotic powers and shotguns. High-risk, high-reward playstyle.
  6. Sentinel: A versatile combatant. Blends biotic and tech powers with strong defensive capabilities (Tech Armor). Adaptable to various combat situations.

Consider your preferred playstyle carefully. Do you enjoy being on the front lines, supporting from a distance, or manipulating the battlefield? Each class offers a distinct set of powers and weapon proficiencies that will shape your combat encounters throughout the trilogy. While you can respec your squadmates, your Shepard's class is permanent.
