Exploiting Enemy AI
Understanding and exploiting the Artificial Intelligence (AI) of your enemies is a cornerstone of success in Mass Effect's combat encounters. Different enemy types exhibit distinct behaviors that can be leveraged to your advantage. For instance, Krogan Battlemasters are known for their aggressive charge attacks and reliance on their biotic shields. When facing them, positioning yourself behind cover and waiting for them to expose themselves after a charge, or using abilities like Overload to quickly drain their shields, can be highly effective. Geth units, particularly the Geth Prime, often employ heavy firepower and coordinated assaults. They tend to advance in predictable patterns, making them susceptible to flanking maneuvers or area-of-effect powers like Singularity or Concussive Shot. Turrets, often found guarding key objectives, will lock onto Shepard and their squad. Destroying them quickly or using abilities that disable them, such as Sabotage, is paramount. Be aware of how enemies react to cover; most will attempt to find cover when under fire. This can be used to your advantage by flushing them out with grenades or by flanking their position. For example, when fighting the three Krogan mercenaries guarding the entrance to the Citadel Embassies, you can use biotic explosions to damage them even when they are behind cover.
- Krogan Battlemasters: Exploit their charge attacks and biotic shields.
- Geth Units: Utilize flanking and area-of-effect powers against their predictable advances.
- Turrets: Prioritize their destruction or disablement with abilities like Sabotage.
- Cover Mechanics: Flush out enemies or flank their positions.
A common mistake is to engage enemies head-on without considering their AI patterns. For example, repeatedly charging into a group of shielded enemies without first draining their shields will likely result in heavy damage. Pay attention to enemy vocalizations; they often sal impending attacks or special abilities. When facing a large number of enemies, such as the waves of husks encountered on Feros, prioritize crowd control abilities to manage the swarm. Abilities like Lift or Throw can temporarily incapacitate multiple enemies, giving you breathing room to focus on more dangerous threats. Remember that your squadmates' AI also plays a role; issuing them specific commands or ensuring they have complementary abilities can sificantly improve your combat effectiveness. For instance, having a squadmate with a powerful sniper rifle like Garrus can help pick off high-priority targets from a distance while you engage the frontline.
