Grenades & Explosives

Grenades and explosives are vital tools in Commander Shepard's arsenal, offering area-of-effect damage and crowd control that can turn the tide of battle. From the tactical deployment of Frag Grenades to the devastating impact of Incendiary Grenades, understanding their properties and effective usage is key to surviving the galaxy's many threats. Each class has access to different grenade types and upgrade paths, making their strategic application even more nuanced.

The standard Frag Grenade, available to most classes, deals moderate concussive damage in a small radius. Upgrading it through the various talent trees can increase its blast radius by up to 50% and its damage output sificantly. For classes like the Soldier or Vanguard, who can carry more grenades (starting with 2 and potentially upgrading to 4), these become reliable openers for engaging groups of enemies or finishing off weakened foes. Engineers and Infiltrators, while perhaps less reliant on grenades as a primary damage source, can still benefit from their utility, especially when upgraded with effects like sticky detonation or increased throw distance.

Incendiary Grenades, often unlocked through specific class talents or found as advanced gear, add a potent damage-over-time effect. These are particularly effective against organic enemies, burning through their health over several seconds. A well-placed Incendiary Grenade on a cluster of Krogan Battlemasters can sificantly reduce their threat before they close the distance. Similarly, Cryo Grenades can freeze enemies solid, rendering them vulnerable to follow-up attacks or allowing Shepard to bypass them entirely. The effectiveness of these grenades is often amplified when combined with biotic or tech powers; for instance, freezing a group with a Cryo Grenade and then detonating them with a biotic explosion from a biotic ally like Liara T'Soni.

When using explosives, always be mindful of your surroundings and potential friendly fire. While Mass Effect generally has forgiving friendly fire mechanics for grenades, a poorly aimed blast can still incapacitate or damage your squadmates. Furthermore, certain enemy types, like Geth Primes or shielded enemies, may require multiple grenade hits or specific types of explosives to overcome their defenses. Mastering the arc of your grenade throw, especially on uneven terrain or when targeting enemies behind cover, is a skill that develops with practice. Don't underestimate the power of a well-timed explosive to clear a path through a swarm of Rachni or to disrupt a heavily fortified position on Feros.
