Leveling Up & Skill Point Allocation
As you gain experience through combat, completing quests, and discovering new locations, Commander Shepard will level up, granting you valuable skill points to invest in your abilities. Each class has a unique set of skill trees, and judicious allocation of these points is crucial for optimizing your combat effectiveness and survivability. For instance, a Soldier might prioritize maxing out the Assault Training tree for increased weapon damage and accuracy, while an Engineer would focus on upgrading their Combat Drone and Overload abilities to control the battlefield and disable enemy shields.
When allocating skill points, consider your chosen class and your preferred playstyle. If you're playing as an Adept, investing heavily in biotic abilities like Throw and Lift will allow you to crowd control and devastate groups of enemies. Conversely, an Infiltrator might want to put points into Sniper Training for critical headshots and Cloak for tactical repositioning. Remember that some abilities have multiple ranks, and reaching higher ranks often unlocks powerful new effects or sificantly boosts existing ones. For example, the Singularity biotic power, when fully upgraded, can incapacitate multiple foes, making it invaluable for managing overwhelming odds.
Don't neglect your passive abilities either. Skills like Fitness (for all classes) increase Shepard's maximum health and shield regeneration, making them more resilient in prolonged engagements. Similarly, the Pistol/Assault Rifle/Shotgun/Sniper Rifle Training skills provide direct boosts to weapon damage and effectiveness, regardless of your class. A common mistake is to spread skill points too thinly across too many abilities. Instead, focus on developing a core set of powers that synergize well with each other and your chosen class. For example, an Engineer using the Sabotage ability to disable Krogan Battlemasters can then follow up with a powerful Overload to strip their shields, creating an opening for a direct assault.
