Squad Management & AI Commands

Effective squad management is paramount to success in Mass Effect, allowing you to leverage the unique skills of your companions and control the flow of combat. You can bring up to two squadmates with you on missions, each with their own distinct abilities and combat specializations. For instance, Tali'Zorah vas Normandy excels at tech abilities like AI Hacking and Energy Drain, making her invaluable against synthetic enemies like Geth. Garrus Vakarian, on the other hand, is a skilled marksman, adept with sniper rifles and combat abilities like Concussive Shot, ideal for taking down shielded foes.

While your squadmates possess a degree of autonomous AI, you can issue specific commands to direct their actions. By default, you can command them to move to a specific location, focus fire on a particular enemy, or use a specific ability. These commands are typically accessed through a tactical overlay or context-sensitive menus. For example, you might order your squad to take cover behind a specific piece of wreckage on the planet Veridia, or direct them to focus their firepower on a heavily armored Krogan Battlemaster. This level of control is crucial for coordinating attacks, setting up biotic combos, or ensuring your squadmates are in optimal positions to support you.

Furthermore, you can customize your squadmates' behavior and loadouts. Through the squad screen, you can equip them with different weapons, armor, and mods, tailoring their effectiveness to your playstyle and the mission at hand. You can also influence their combat priorities, such as whether they should prioritize biotic powers, tech abilities, or direct weapon fire. For example, if you're facing a large group of unshielded enemies, you might set your squad to prioritize area-of-effect biotic powers like Lift or Throw. Conversely, against a single, powerful boss enemy, you might instruct them to focus their heavy weapon fire and use single-target debuffs. Mastering these squad management mechanics will sificantly enhance your survivability and tactical options, especially when facing challenging encounters on missions like the infiltration of the Geth Dreadnought.
